According to his brother, Simon Wardwell's obituary, John settled in Salem, Massachusetts. Listed in Salem City Directory in 1837, cordwainer on North court. Living in Salem at 1850 ($500 in real estate) and 1860 census with real estate valued at $1200 and personal estate value of $200. Listed in 1850 Salem Directory as a shoemaker with house at 20 Hathorne. Living at 20 Hathorne in 1861. An Eleanor B. Wardwell is living at the same address. In Salem at 1870 Census with real estate valued at $2000. Two John Wardwells are listed in the Salem Business Directory in 1861, most likely him and his son. They lived at 11 and 20 Hathorne Street. Died of Cancer. Gravestone reads "With Patience and Resignation Bore His Sufferings".
