John is reported to have been in the bootlegging business and ran afoul of a cousin of Margaret Smith's first husband Cyrus Shultz, who is alledged to have killed him and dumped his body on railroad tracks. A train hit the body, and it was rumored he was passed out on the tracks when the train came through. However, such was not the case per the coroner's office. He was deceased prior to the train incident. With the family being poor, and the business John was in, no further inquiries were made. As reported by (Dolores) Anne Davis in 1998.

He was a twin to Bob.
