John Henry Leonard enlisted 03/19/1862 in Salem Light Artillery, Co. A, Hardaway's Battalion Stonewall Jackson's Corps., Army of West Virginia. First battle Craney Island and afterwards in battles of Richmond, Seven Pines and other engagements of his regiment. He enlisted in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, along with his 3 brothers. Following is his record: (789:133-138) Enlisted as a Private on 19 March 1862 at the age of 20 Enlisted in Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 19 March 1862. Transferred Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 08 May 1862 Transfered in Salem Light Artillery Regiment Virginia on 08 May 1862. At the close of the war he was honorably discharged and returned to his home in Virginia. In the census of 1 July 1870 he was living in Woodford County, Illinois on the farm of Ayles and Virginia Whitaker, working as a farmhand with his fellow veteran from Augusta County, Virginia, Peter Coyner.

In 1868 John went to Woodford County, IL where he worked for John McCauley near Roanoke. In 1870 he married Emma Gullett, daughter of William and Priscilla Gullett and began housekeeping on a farm near Metamora, IL. July 13, 1874 Edith Emma was born and later that year the family moved to Dix Township in Ford Co., IL and bought 100 acres in the S.W. corner of which  the Blackford school was located. Earlier, Alfred Thomas Gullett, Emma Leonard's brother had married and came to Ford Co.. His farm was west of the Blackford School.  Emma Gullett Leonard died after the birth of her son, John Henry.  Edith and the baby were taken to Woodford Co. by the grandparents where the baby died the following summer. Edith remained until school age when her father brought her back to Ford Co.

VA, Woodford Co., Roanoke twp., role 295, pg 465, Related?) 1880 Census: IL, Dix, Ford Co., John 40 b VA, living with Joseph Lower family (dau Edith Emma 4, was living with the Wm. Gullett's in Roanoke, IL.) On Oct.24, 1882 John Leonard married Anna Whorrell of Woodford Co., IL. John Thomas born 1883 and William Hendricks born 1885. About 1892 the farm was traded for land in Kansas and the family moved to a farm in Buttler Co. Near Haverhill. That farm was later traded for one in Sumner Co. near Wellington and the family moved to ( 210 S. Fern) Wichita, KS. Anna Leonard died in 1933.
