Eleanor Hill Cross George (b. 1813) was the daughter of Capt. William Cross (b. 1770 ; d. 1845 in Shelby Co., Ala.) and Susannah (Susan) Lane Cross (b. 1780 in Va. ; d. 1856 in Shelby Co., Ala.). Both are buried in the William Cross Cemetery, near Pelham, Shelby Co., Ala. William Cross was in Franklin Co., Tn. in 1808, where he bought land on the Elk River, owning 3000 acres in all. He sold this in 1816 and moved his family to Shelby Co., Ala. The tradition is the family is that the parents of Susannah Lane Cross were William Lane (b. 1740 ; d. 1808 in Ga.), a Revolutionary soldier and Nancy Allen Lane (b. 1748 in Va. ; d. 1802-3 in Ga.) of Va. They migrated from Va. to Wilkes Co., Ga. about 1793. Susannah married William Cross against her father's wishes and he disowned her, so the tradition goes. Ms. Gustavus Alphonse George was born 18 Oct.1855 in Leake Co. Ms. Thomas Jefferson Lane George was born 5 July 1851 in Neshoba Co. Ms. Deaths: John Alexander George died on the battlefield at Shiloh,TN. 6 Apr.1862 James Ford George died of Typhoid fever in Jackson in the service of the Confederate States 30 Oct.,1862. Andrew Jackson George died of small pox in the Military prison at Alton,Ill. 16 Feb.1866 John Ford George died of pneumonia 2 June, 1876 in Leake Co.
