There is some circumstantial evidence which supports a theory that this John Donnelly might be related to the Francis Donnelly of the Calfpasture.

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:
- John Donelly, Sr., and Paul Garrison received a patent for 137 acres, 29th May, 1760, "on waters of Catawbo at a place called the Knob; corner land of John Donilly, Sr.", (as listed in the records below).

- Page 105.--30th October, 1765. John Donilly's estate appraised, by Bryan McDonald, John Armstrong.
- Page 379.--22d March, 1770. John Donnelly, Sr.'s, estate settlement recorded--William Preston, administrator, 1765. 1765, cash paid Saml. Piper for making a coffin. 1765, 29th October, cash paid Joseph Cloyd for rum for vendue. Cash paid Drewry Puckett, James McAffee, David Fleming, Joseph McDonald, Conrad Wall, James Cloyd, administratrix of Abraham Biss. Has paid the widow her thirds, and three of the children. Estate sold at vendue to, viz: Danl. McCormick, Walter Stewart, Drury Puckett, Archd. Fisher, Michael Reesener, James Laughlin, Elizabeth Hance, George Darr, Wm. Thornton.

- Vol. 1 - MAY, 1753. - Francis Sybert vs. Donnally and Garrison.--In 1749, Sybert bought of John Donnolly 300 acres on headwaters of Roanoke River in Colonel Patton's Grant of 5,000 acres, but John transferred his right to Paul Garrison.
- Vol. 1 - AUGUST, 1755 (A). - Love vs. Steelman.--Deposition of John Donily, aged 78 years, 26th May, 1755. (Note: record establishes John Donnelly's date of birth in abt. 1677)
- Vol. 1 - MARCH, 1756 (B). - Rose's executors vs. Donnolly.--Anne Rose, Alexander Rose, Thomas Fitzhugh and John Rose, executors of Robert Rose, Clerk, complain of John Donnolly. Deposition of Philip Davis says that he was overseer for Robert Rose at a plantation of his on Tye river in Albemarle County, in 1743.

- Page 340.--8th March, 1763. Paul ( ) Garrison, of Roan County, North Carolina, to John Donilly, £20, 68 acres, said Garrison's part of 137 acres patented to John Donelly, Sr., and Paul Garrison, 29th May, 1760, on waters of Catawbo at a place called the Knob; corner land of John Donilly, Sr.
