After marrying LaVilla they settled just south of Monmouth, oregon. The first state teacher's college was started there. J.R. founded the first brick yard at Independence and donated most of the bricks for the building of many churches in Dallas, Monmouth and Independence. Bill and Frank Dickson earned their first money working for Grandpa Cooper in the brickyard when they were small.

In 1877 J.R. (then age 45) volunteered for the Modoc Wars against Capt. Jack under Jesse Applegate (son of John). When he got down to Crater Lake area and saw what it was all about he was completely disgusted and came back home serving only a matter of days.
