John Buckley was born in 1847 at New Ferry in the parish of Bebington, Cheshire, the son of a cowkeeper called Peter Buckley and his wife Mary. John grew up in New Ferry. His father died some time between 1851 and 1861. By 1861 his mother had taken in a lodger, James Allison, who she would later marry. John later end up looking after his elderly stepfather James Allison.

As a young man, John left New Ferry and went to work at the rapidly-expanding town of Barrow-in-Furness, where he was living in 1871. He did not stay long there, returning to Bebington to marry Ellen Ralston in 1874. Straight after their marriage they moved away again, this time to Chadderton in Lancashire, where their eldest two children were born. By 1880 they had returned to New Ferry, where they settled and had another six children. In New Ferry, John worked as a provision dealer and cowkeeper.

John died on 1st November 1902, aged 55. Ellen outlived him by over 25 years, and died in 1928.
