John Bentman was baptised on 28th November 1725 at Shillington in Bedfordshire, son of Mary Bentman, formerly Dicks, and her husband James Bentman, a labourer. John was the couple's eldest surviving child - their daughter Ann had died six months before his birth.

John has yet to be positively traced after his baptism, although there is a reference in the Shillington parish registers on 6th August 1765 relating to "a still born child of Jn and Eliz Bentiman interred". This is quite likely this John, although no marriage to an Elizabeth has yet been found.
