(Where is the William STEEL who sold land in 1805 and 1825 in Fairfield Co?) 1820 HOCKING County, lists only one STEEL - James, (Salt Creek Twp) over 45 - the REV WAR VETERAN!!! That he served in the service ofthe United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. He was born in Ireland, the year he cannot state, the book containing his age was left there, ___ cannot have ________ in it. He was in a Regiment commanded by Col. James Cunningham and in a Brigade commanded by Gen. Hand. There was another Company in same Brigade _____ Col. Chambers. General Hand acted as Col. before his Brigade was formed of the two Battallions of the Flying Camp. They were marched to Philadelphia, to Trenton, to Princeton, to Kingstown, Brunswick, Elizabethtown, Bergen on the north _____, New York, Long Island, Flatbush and back to Brooklin. We crofsed over the sound to New York ____ through ____ [Long?] Island crofsed H______ to Delaney's Mill when General Hand first took charge of them. They went to Fort Washington from that ___ _____ M____, from _____ M______ through North Castle crofsed to Stony Point from that to T_____ where Andrew [?} was subsequently hung. They returned to Brunswick, where they were discharged after serving out the term of five months. When in Long Island, he was in the Battle fought there. General Handy joined [?} Sullivant and ______ [Pitman?] was then in command. At which time General Sullivant was taken prisoner. He received no written discharge. After he served out his term he returned to Lancaster County and in a month or two after he volunteered for two months in a company commanded by Jack Maarshall. John Clark was 1st Lieutenant, _____ Hannah 2nd Lieutenant and Thomas Gourly Ensign. We were marched _____ to Marcus Hook from that by water to Fort Penn from that to Dover, from that to Lewistown at the mouth of the Delaware. They returned to Marcus Hook when we were discharged, having served out the term of two months. We were in a ________[Regiment?] commanded by Col. Miles and in a battallion commanded by Major Piper [?] - received no written discharge. This is all the _________ has served. He the last term he was in no battles. He has stated his age, the officers under whom he served and the service he rendered with as much precision as he now can. He never had a written discharge and he has not writings, or documentary evidence to prove his service nor any witnesses by whom he can prove his service. In the year 1779 he removed to Washington County in Pennsylvania. He stayed there more than thirty years when he removed to his present residence near the county of Fairfield as informed. He states that he knows of no lawyer living in Hocking. The court is only held twice a year in that county and the distance to Lancaster is just about three miles nearer than to Logan, the county seat of Hocking. These are the reasons he made his application at this place _____ __ ____ of _______ ___ and where he could have his claim attended to. He is well acquainted with _________ __________ and the Reverend Jacob Meyer of his vicinity, or present neighborhood and who can testify as to his character for veracity and the belief of his service as a Soldier of the Revolution. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of any agency of any State. Signed.... (McAllister) Steel, is one of the leading citizens of Sheffield Twp. He was born in Ross Co OH 06 Aug 1842, and was about four years of age when brought to this county. He was reared on the old homestead in Sheffield Township, and was educated in the schools at Wyandotte and the Stockwell High School. He was married 06 Mar 1866 to Miss Sarah E. Michaels, a native of LaFayette IN, and daughter John B. and Sarah (Lee) Michaels. Her father was an active and influential man in the early history of the county, and for some time was connected with the press of LaFayette. John B. Michaels was a son of Moses and Sarah Michaels, and was born at Albany, Edwards Co IL, in 1818. Mrs. Michaels was a daughter of William and Hannah Lee, and was born in Hamilton Co OH in 1819. They were united in marriage 26 May 1840. Mr. and Mrs. Lee were among the earliest settlers of Sheffield Twp, and one of their sons, Smith Lee, was at one time auditor of the county. He was a Mason of high standing, and also an Odd Fellow, and was one of LaFayette's most esteemed citizens. He was holding the office of county sheriff at the time of his death, which occurred 08 Dec 1847. To Burton Steel and his wife were born two children -- May, born 02 Feb 1869, and Frank, born 15 Oct 1870. Mr. Steel has lived on his present farm since his marriage, with the exception of ten months spent in Texas, and in 1880 he erected his present substantial residence, and the same year built a fine barn. His farm consists of eighty-three acres of choice land, and everything about the place indicates care and thrift. In politics, Mr. Steel is a Republican. He was elected township trustee in Apr 1886, which office he still holds with credit to himself and satisfaction to his constituents. He has always taken an active interest in the advancement of religion, education and temperance, and every enterprise for the advancement of the same has his encouragement and Support. Both he and his wife are active members of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Dayton, and he is Superintendent of the Sabbath School.
