James is referred to as "Captain James". Several generations of Love men have been tall 6'7" and weighed 250 pounds. This may partly explain James III early entrance into military service. He was born Jan 24,1763 and was paid for 308 days S.C. Militia 1780-81, 48 days quartermaster & 56 days Adjutant in 1782. All service was mounted, each man supplied his own mount & and reimbursed only if the steed was lost. Sources Love Family Quarterly 7/57 p6 " " " 10/57 Vol 4 No. 4 James Love, altho only 17 years old served with distinction in the latter part of the war. While commanding a scouting party, he was so nearly surrounded by a force of the British under Colonel Tarlton at Fishing Creek, August 18, 1780 as to make it necessary to swim a river to escape capture. In the effort to carry his equipment he became exhausted and would have drowned but for the aid of his comrades. His death resulted from a head injury received while swimming with his horse across Catowba River, near the present site of Davidson College, N.C. (Battle of Beatties Ford) on Catowba River. He died at the age of 44 years. Of the five sons who survived him three of them Aaron, John and David served in the War of 1812. References: See Johnson's TRADITIONS OF THE REVOLUTION -- page 346.
