    James Davis Jr., a son of James and Judith (Maxson) Davis, was born about 1740 in NJ and died after 1803 in Harrison County VA. He married Rebecca Brand July 1, 1765 in Monmouth County NJ. Rebecca, a daughter of William and Elizabeth (Davis) Brand, was born about 1748 in NY or Monmouth County NJ and died after 1803.

    James was an appraiser for the estate of his deceased brother Jacob Davis, on November 18,1793, New Salem, Harrison County VA. He was a trustee of the town of New Salem when it was charted by the Virginia General Assembly in December 1794.

    James and Rebecca Davis also signed the Marriage Bond for their son Joseph to marry Experience Maxson, February 12,1795.

    They are recorded as being members of the New Salem Seventh Day Baptist Church, on September 10,1797. They recorded their deeds at Shrewsbury, NJ in 1789,as did others who migrated to Harrison County VA.

    On May 9,1803, James and Rebecca Davis, with others, signed a Certificate permitting Joseph Davis to Preach". Source is : "The Settlers of Salem, West Virginia by Susie Davis Nicholson"

    James Davis is also listed in the Scotch and Irish Book "The Chalkley's" Books as a surveyor and supervisor.
