Supposed husband charged with illicit parentage

Deserted Miss Maude Dovel After Living With Her Four Months As Her Husband.

After having lived as man and wife since last September, at which time they claimed to have been married at Richmond, Indiana, James Crumrine and Miss Maud Dovel, who was supposed to have been Mrs. James Crumrine, have now separated and Crumrine has been arrested on the charge of being the father of a daughter born to Miss Dovel on January 8. An affidavit against him was filed by Miss Dovel In the court of Magistrate W.M. Rock Tuesday afternoon, and Crumrine was immediately placed under arrest. Upon arraignment he pleaded not guilty and the hearing was set for next Tuesday morning at ten o'clock. He was placed under $500 bond which was furnished by his father.

The separation of the young couple and the admission and claim of both that they had never been married was a great shock to their many friends in Urbana. Both are members of well known and prominent families in the city. Crumrine is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Crumrine of South Main street and Miss Dovel is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Dovel, who reside on the same street.
