[edit] NotesFrom Cartmill Family DNA site: http://www.cartmill-genealogy.com/dna.html 1. James Cartmill - born about 1740. Died about 1810 in Cabell County, WV. Married Margaret about 1760. Moved to the Bluestone River area of Montgomery County, VA about 1780. The area in which James settled was about 75 miles SW of Botetourt County. James was given 30 pounds when his father died in 1786. After James' father died in 1786, James returned to Botetourt County for about 5 years (1786-1791). James kept his property on the Bluestone River though and around 1791-1792 James returned there. The area of Montgomery County in which James settled became Wythe County in 1790 and then Tazewell County in 1800. Between 1800 and 1810 James and his three sons, John, Thomas and Henry sold their properties in Tazewell County and moved NW into Cabell County, WV. He married Margaret Unknown. Notes for James Cartmill: Res. (Botetourt) VA; is in court records there 1773-88. Listed as (Tazewell) VA Revolutionary Soldier resident. Vol. 2 of Scots-Irish in VA Court and Vestry Records of (Augusta) VA Order Book XXIV, p. 350. v1: "Givens vs. Cartmell..." names James, brother of John 1766. Bill Owens-Smith of Genforum thinks James in 1782 (Montgomery) VA tax may be son of henry (of Purgatory Ck., Botetourt Co. and died 1786 Botetourt); names sons John, James and Henry. 1777 Henry Sr., Jr., James, john on (Bot.) Tax between James River and Buffalo Ck (including Purgatory Cr.) Henry's will 1786 left $ to James, land to John and Henry Jr. Wonders if James is father of Henry of Cabell.
