Torbett, at Chattanooga, wrote a letter to Horace Rice Torbett's wife, Elizabeth (SAVAGE) Torbettt of Smithville, DeKalb Co., TN, telling of the death of her husband.

"Dear Lizzie- I take this the first opportunity of drafting a letter to let you know that Horace R. Torbett your husband was wounded at Shiloh in the leg. He made his way back to this place but could go no further. His general health was very bad. His bowels was running off. His lungs very much effected. I had the best care I could taken of him but to no purpose. He lingered three weeks and died the 10th of this month.I had him decently interred in the cemetery here. He had a very decent suit of cloth in which he was burried. I paid all of his expenses here. He had a little pocket book with seven or eight dollors in it which I will send you when I have a safe opportunity. In Haste, yours affectionately,

                                                s/ G.C. Torbett

P.S. He was very anxious to see you but it was impossable- G.C.T."
