Birth and Early Life

Harriott Wickham was born on May 23, 1890 in Norwalk, Ohio the second child of Frank Wickham and Agnes Benedict.[1] Her father was an editor of the Norwalk Reflector, which had been in the family since its founding in 1823. When the paper went bankrupt as a result of the Panic of 1907, he managed the sale of the paper and transition to its new owners. He then became a lobbyist for the American Tarriff Society, living away from home in New York and Washington DC until his retirement.

At the time of Harriott’s birth, her elder sister Eleanor Wickham was two years old. Other siblings followed: William Wickham in 1893, Lucy Wickham in 1897, and David Wickham in 1904. Harriott graduated from Norwalk High School in 1907 and the following school year continued studying at the high school in preparation to be a school teacher.

Harriott taught at a one-room school in Peru Township 1908-09.[3] At the end of the school year, her Uncle Louis Severance, an oil magnate and philanthropist, decided to send her and several of her cousins to College of Wooster where he was a trustee.[5] In summer of 1910, she and her sister Eleanor accompanied their aunts Mary Benedict and Suzan Benedict on a tour of Europe, also funded by her uncle.

After graduation from Wooster in 1913,[6] she returned to teaching in Mt Vernon, South Dakota.[8] During World War I, she and her sister Eleanor conducted surveys for the Labor Board.

Years in the West

After the war, she went west to teach in Wyoming. In 1920, she and another woman homesteaded on adjoining claims near Wheatland, Wyoming; teaching school in Wheatland during the winter and proving their claims during the summer.[10] A local rancher had helped them file their claims. This rancher had an ulterior motive for his beneficence. In order to control the water he needed for his cattle, he would pay drifters to establish claims on land, knowing they would never stick around. He expected two “school marm’s” from Ohio would not last long, either. But they proved him wrong! On November 10, 1925 Harriott received the deed to her land.

In 1922, Harriott married Angus Barton, a young rancher ten years her junior. They established a sheep ranch on the homestead and raised a family of four on the homestead during the hard times of the great depression and dust bowl.[11][12] The demand for wool during World War II finally brought prosperity.

Final Years

After the war, Angus and Harriott sold ranch and moved to Norwalk. They purchased a farm south of town in North Fairfield Township. Angus died in 1970. Harriott stayed on the farm for a few years, then sold it and moved into Norwalk. In her later years, she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. When she could no longer live alone, she went to a nursing home in Willard, Ohio, where she died in 1981.[13] She was buried in the North Fairfield Cemetery, North Fairfield, Ohio.[14]
