Facts and Events
The 1900 census lists his occupation as a ship's painter and says that he was a widower. Hazel Maus says that George's mother lived in New Jersey. She owned a summer guest house on the shore. She also says he was a chef on a yacht, not a ships’ painter as the census record says. Maybe he did both. His death certificate (#145060) was issued by the Borough of Brooklyn. He died of arteriosclerosis. At the time of his death he was in Kings County Hospital but had been living at 756 Third Ave, Brooklyn. The 1920 census shows that he was living with Richard and Viola Gallagher and that the Mackays lived in the same building. The certificate says he was a painter and had lived in the city all his life. The 1860 U.S. census (roll 843) has a George Peters living in New York, Newton, Astoria, house number 1241, but I couldn’t figure out the street. His age is given as 28, so that would mean the ages are wrong. The 1850 census (series M593, roll 1081, page 307) has a George Peters in North Hempstead, but he’s black. The 1892 state census of New York shows the family living at 223 24th Street, Brooklyn,New York. Living together were George Sr., his mother Elizabeth, George Jr., Frank, Elizabeth Jr. and Margaret. The 1900 census shows that he was living with his son, Frank, at 756 Third Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.
The 1920 census shows that he was living at 756 Third Avenue, where Martha said he lived the whole time she knew him. He was a boarder with Richard and Viola Gallagher there. The Mackay Family lived at the same place, William, Lillian, George and Hazel. References
