HOLMES, HOMS, or HULMES, GEORGE, (English,) bought Mar. 14, 1649, the lot of Ambrose London in Gd of Wm Golder, as per Gd rec. There was a Joris Holmes in N. A. who had several children bp. in the R. D. ch. of that place, and who was inspector of tobacco in 1653. Made his mark to documents. A George Holmes (probably the above George) with 12 or 13 persons, besides his hired man Thomas Hall, all English from Connecticut, undertook in 1635 to make a settlement in the Dutch territory on the Delaware, making an attack on Fort Nassau which failed, they being made prisoners by the Dutch and carried to Manhattan, as per p. 40 of Hazard's Annals of Pa. (see also p. 127 of Vol. IV. of the Genealogical Record), where most of them remained and settled. He probably with other English settlers at N. A. followed Lady Mody to Gd. There was a Joris Horns of N. Y. who m. Aug. 22, 1695, in N. Y., Anneken Kaljiers of N. Albany, both residents of Buk at date of marriage. Samuel of Gd (s. of Rev. Obadiah Holmes), b. 1642; m.
