Facts and Events
Franz Rudolph Kabisch was born on 29 August 1836 in Zeitz, Prussia. He was baptized on 11 September 1836 in the Church of St. Michael in Zeitz. He was one of three children of Johann Friedrich Kabisch and Louise Christiane Wilhelmine Homberg. All three emigrated to Fort Wayne, Indiana. According to the 1900 census Rudolph arrived in 1850, but I think he may have come with his parents and brother Julius on 12 August 1853, when he was almost 17. In the 1860 census Rudolph was 24 years old and a plasterer. He married another German immigrant Katharina Ellett on the 30 Jul 1860 in St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne. They lived on the west side of Webster Street between Washington ad Jefferson streets, very near St. John’s Church. By 1866 they lived in a house on the northwest corner of Fairfield Avenue and Poplar St. In the 1870 census he is 32 and a butcher. The value of his real estate was $1250 and $100. Five of their children had been born already. In 1878 the last daughter, Katherine, was born. By 1889 his meat market, Kabisch & Son, was located at 156 Fairfield Avenue and his residence was at 182 Fairfield. His eldest son Frederick C. Kabisch worked with him. In the 1900 census he and Katharine have only their youngest daughter Katherine, age 21, living with them. He was a “dealer in meats” and lived at 182 Fairfield Avenue in Fort Wayne.S1 Rudolph Kabisch died on 27 August 1902 and on the 31 August he was buried in Lindenwood Cemetery in Fort Wayne.
