The following newspaper skitch appeared Oct 2, 1876. "Capt., Felix H. Torbett, who was killed in west Tennessee, as announce in a dispatch from Memphis this morning, was born and reared in Nashville, and was a nephew of the late Col. G.C. Torbell. In 1859 he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private soldier, and was subsequently appointed a Second Lieutenant in the 16th Infantry, and by regimental promotion was promoted to Captaincy. In 1866 he was transfered to the 18th Infantry, with which he remained until its consolidation with the 16th, when he was assigned to the 25th Infantry. Soon afterwards he was mustered out of the service and received the appointment as United States marshall for West Tennessee. While in the Army he was a great favorite with both privates and officers. Previous to his enlistment he edited a paper in Missouri He leaves a wife and one daughter who are now in brooklyn New York." BIOGRAPHY: Felix Huston TORBETT Major in US Army in the Civil War His father, John Harrington TORBETT, was born in Monroe County, TN and was the County Recorder of Hamilton County in 1842-43. He established the town of Vannville near Harrison, TN. He moved the family to Arkansas where in the 1850's he became a member of the Arkansas legislature and in 29 Nov. 1858 died with his funeral in the State Capital in Little Rock, AR. Four of his sons served in the Civil War--three in the CSA (Pvt.Horace Rice TORBETT-wounded in battle at Shiloh and died three weeks later, Pvt. John Burton TORBETT-killed in battle at Washington, AR, Capt.Granville Armstrong TORBETT-led the TORBETT COMPANY of HARDY'S ARKANSAS Infrantry Regiment [Co H, 19th AR Inf]-moved to Texas after the war) and Felix Huston TORBETT, Major in US Army--married in Brooklyn, NY Torbett, Felix H., 1st Lt, 16th inf, USA, 25 Nov 1863, Missionary Ridge Tenn, wounded. |
