From Helen Endecott's research.."Baptized as "Ferntown" in Six Mile Run Dutch Church, November 19, 1771. Burial Middlebush Cemetery New Jersey. Early in life he was left an orphan as on June 1, 1778, at age seven, he stated that both his parents were dead and he chose John Bergen as his guardian. Throughout his life he resided at Middlebush, N.J., where he owned and occupied 160 acres and was engaged chiefly in agricultural pursuits. For many years he was a Justice of the Peace and also an assessor and collector of Franklin Township. He was named an executor in the will of his great Uncle Daniel Barcalow no.39 dated October 25, 1798, and proved December 7, 1801. In 1815 when New Jersey established a new system of Militia, he was created a Colonel in the Somerset County Brigade. In this capacity he went to Trenton, along with his staff, in 1825 to assist in escorting General LaFayette, then visiting this country, throughout the state. He was an active member of the Millstone Dutch Church, serving as deacon and elder for many years. He rendered service in the building of the new church in 1828. |
