Elizabeth Underwood’s origins have yet to be established. The age given when she died suggests she was born around 1740. Her first confirmed sighting is on 21st June 1763 when she married Thomas Berridge at Harringworth in Northamptonshire.

Shortly after their marriage, Elizabeth and Thomas moved about four miles north to the town of Uppingham in Rutland, where they had two sons baptised in 1764 and 1766. They then returned to Harringworth, having a son baptised there in 1769 and a daughter in 1771.

Elizabeth’s daughter died in January 1790, aged twenty.

Thomas died just over a year later in February 1791. Elizabeth and Thomas had been married for 27 years.

Elizabeth survived Thomas by 36 years. She was buried at Harringworth on 15th July 1827, when she was said to be 87 years old.

    Possible baptism:
1740 / Elizabeth the Daughter of Tho[ma]s Underwood was Bapt[ised] July the 14th

This would seem to be the most likely baptism, being at around the time implied by the age given when she died, and in the parish where two of Elizabeth’s children were baptised.
