Rawlinson, of Greenhead, in Colton.
—:—
- ...
- The Rawlinsons are of a long standing in High Furness, and were very numerous in the parish of Hawkshead and Colton. Alexander, the immediate predecessor of the last abbot of Furness, was of that name. The well-known Curwen Rawlinson has left a pedigree of his family from the reign of king Hen. VII. down to his own time; which is as follows.‡
- ...
- "Robert Rawlinson, son and heir of William Rawlinson, as also heir to a fair estate of Mireside and Cark Hall, descended on him from Robert Curwen, gent, his mother's brother. He married Jane, daughter of Thomas Wilson, of Heversham Hall, in Westmorland : by her he had issue Curwen Rawlinson, his eldest child, and six daughters, viz. 1. Anne, married, first, to Christopher Crakenthorp, of Newbiggen, in Westmorland, esq. her second husband was George Bynard, physician, at Bristow ; 2. Elizabeth ; 3. Catharine ; 4. Ellen ; 5. Dorothy ; 6. Jane. He had also a younger son, William Rawlinson, who was a student at St. John's College, Cambridge.

Note
- In the paragraph above, which purports to be quoted from a pedigree of his family drawn up by Curwen Rawlinson, there is no 'Edward Rawlinson' listed amongst his brothers and sisters. There is however an Elizabeth Rawlinson. What is very odd about this is that while there are records of the christenings of all but one of these - including an 'Edward Rawlinson' – the one whose name does not appear in the Cartmel parish church register – (as transcribed and published in The Registers of the Parish Church of Cartmel in the County of Lancaster : Christenings, Burials and Weddings, 1559-1661) S2 – is Elizabeth. And if we are to take the sequence of the daughters as listed in Curwen Rawlinson's pedigree as the likely order by age, then Elizabeth comes next after Anne and before Catharine - which is precisely the same as where the supposed 'Edward' comes in the sequence of christenings. Of course, it is entirely possible that Edward may have died before 'brother' Curwen drew up his pedigree. Although surely that should not have caused him to leave him out! And there is no record (in the aforementioned work) of any burial at Cartmel of an 'Edward' (son of Robert Rawlinson) between 1643 and 1665.
- In his will (written in 1665 - the same year he died), Robert Rawlinson mentions his second daughter Elizabeth by name but no son Edward:—
- "... to my sonne and daughter Crackenthorpe (his then married eldest daughter, Anne) twentie shillings appeace as much to each of their children. ... to my eldest sonne Curwen Rawlinson ... to my sonne William and my ffive younger daughters unpreferred att the time of my death equallie amongst them ... And I doe further appointe that the said portions shall be raysed and payd in manner following that is to say ffirst to my sonne William then Elizabeth and soe to the next and eldest of age one after another, yett all to have competent maintainaince with dyett & apparrell and education in the meane tyme. ... And I do hereby revoke all former wills by me made and to this my will have subscribed my name and sett my sealle this eighteenth day of October in the seaventeenth yeare of the raigne of o'r soveraigne Lord King Charles the Second and in the yeare of our lord God one thousand six hundred sixty and five. [signed] ROBERT RAWLINSON."

- ↑ This is actually derived from the christening of an Edward son of Robert Rawlinson'. But it is likely that either the original entry in the parish register was written down incorrectly or it has been mis-transcribed. See 'Note' above.
