Effa's father was John Davis. When Effa was a little girl, her mother was killed by Cherokee Indians, and the Indians then kidnapped her and her sister Elizabeth. The Indians took the two little girls back to their camp near Chattanooga, TN. They held them there for years. When Effa was about 14 years old, she was released. She was then pregnant, and she was also "half-scalped."
For the rest of her life, Effa always wore a bonnet, even to bed, as she was so ashamed of the way that her head looked (all the scars and the missing chunks of hair).
When Effa's child was born, she named him Asa (FAG #151137778). He was, of course, half-Cherokee Indian. Shortly after Asa was born, a man named Davis Lansford Fields offered to marry Effa, because he knew that nobody else would. It was said that Davis was distantly related to Effa.
Davis Fields raised Effa's young son Asa as his own. Davis and Effa also had several children of their own, including a son named William Jason Fields, who married a woman whose first name was Lydia; and a son named Isaac Fields, who married Ailsie Day.
Asa Fields later married Rachel Sargent, on 7-12-1811, in Greene County, Tennessee. They had nine children: William Turner Fields (b. 10-14-1812), who married Rebecca Back in 1842; Jane "Jincy" Fields (b. 12-25-1815), who married Solomon Back in 1835; Ephraim Fields (b. 2-16-1818), who married Lydia Noble in 1840; Debbie Fields (b. about 1821), who married John Cockrell Jr. in 1838; Elizabeth "Betsy" Fields (b. about 1823), who never married but had ten children out of wedlock; Abraham Fields (b. 5-24-1822), who married Mary Noble and Margaret Burgess; Stephen B. Fields (b. 9-6-1828), who married Katherine Back and Eliza Jane Barnes; Asa Fields Jr. (b. about 1836), who was crippled in one knee, and married Sarah Gibson; and Polly Fields (b. about 1837).
