    DURHAM - Mrs. Claudia Erwin Powe Watkins, resident of Croasdaile Village died Sunday, February 13, 2005. Mrs. Watkins was born in Durham on August 23, 1908. She was the daughter of the late Claudia Josephine Erwin Powe and Edward Knox Powe. Her husband, Warren Byers Watkins and a son, Warren Byers Watkins, Jr. preceded her in death.

    Mrs. Watkins was educated at Salem Academy, St. Anne's School, and Gunstan Hall. She was a member of St. Philips Episcopal Church where she was an active Daughter of the King and a former Alter Guild member. She was also a life member of the Mayflower Society, The Colonial Dames, and The Daughters of The American Revolution.

    She is survived by her son, Edward Powe Watkins and wife, Evelyn Gooch Watkins of Durham; daughter, Claudia Watkins Belk and husband, John Montgomery Belk of Charlotte; a daughter-in-law, Mary Helen Shelbourne Watkins of Durham; grandchildren, Warren Byers Watkins III and wife, Suzy Howell of Warrenton, Virginia; Mary Elfreth Watkins of Washington, D.C.; Susan Banks Watkins of Charlotte; Palmer Shelbourne Watkins of Oak Island, NC, Edward Powe Watkins, Jr. and wife, Amy Overman of Sanford, and Mary Claudia Belk Pilon and husband Jeffrey Neal Pilon of Huntersville; great grandchildren, Caroline Grace Watkins, Carter Banks Watkins, Thomas Edward Watkins, Lucy Celeste Watkins and James Montgomery Pilon

    She is also survived by her best friend and companion, Irene Perry, who has meant so much to her and her family for so many years.

    The family is also appreciative of the care she has received at Croasdaile Village.

    Graveside services will be held at Maplewood Cemetery, section 9, on Monday, February 21, 2005 at 2:00 pm. Rev. Scott Benhase will officiate.

    Memorials may be sent to St. Philips Church, E.K. Powe School or Croasdaile Retirement Center. The family is being assisted by Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home.
