In 1926 he was asked to take up arms and he refused because his religion forbade it: "Thou Shalt Not Kill". Christian was put in jail. The Vogels left May 13, 1927, from Bremen, Germany on the "Derfflinger" and arrived May18, 1927, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Vogels came to Windsor, Canada shortly after that. In 1930 they bought farm land on Graham Side Road in Ruthven, Canada. They built a stone house and barn with a straw roof. They raised cows, horses, chickens and pigs and grew corn, tomatoes and wheat. In 1933 they planted peach and apple trees. Later, they gave up farming to harvest peaches and apples. The Vogels belong to the Apostolic Christian Church of the Nazarene in Windsor, Canada. |
