The "History and Genealogical Record of the Lawrence Family" says: CARL FRANKLIN LAWRENCE, the second son of James Mann and Sarah Chandler Lawrence, was born in Plain Grove township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, November 20, 1849. His education was obtained in the public schools, supplemented by a few terms in a private academy. The early years of his life was given to farming, with a side line of civil engineering and land surveying. In the year 1893 he removed with his family to Grove City, Mercer County, Penna. from Plain Grove, and became proprietor and editor of the Grove City Reporter. Sold the newspaper and job printing establishment in 1911, and retired from active business, removing to California in 1913. At that time he was a Director of the First National Bank of Grove City, President of the Building and Loan Association, Trustee of the local Hospital, Treasurer of Woodland Cemetery Association, City Assessor, member of the Republican County Committee, and of the Grove City Masonic Lodge. He had also served as Justice of the Peace for ten years, Notary Public, School Director, Clerk of the City Council, President of the Commercial Club, and Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge. Since removing to California he has been successfully engaged in the culture and shipping of oranges. He was Married September 5, 1871 to Miss Mary A. Barber, and on September 5, 1921 they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. The family residence is in Claremont, California, corner Eighth Street and Indian Hill Boulevard. References
