Barbara N. Wardwell, 71, of Danforth Street, died Friday at her home after a long illness. She was born in Winchester, Mass., a daughter of Horace I. and Hester Fuller Newcomb. In 1938, her family moved to Addison, where she graduated from Addison High School. From 1957 to 1969, she was associated with Lackee Funeral Home, Bridgton. Mrs. Wardwell later worked in the office of the Bridgton News and owned and operated The Flower Pot, a florist shop in Bridgton. In 1984, she moved to Portland and worked in sales at the Wise Guide until her retirement in 1992. In 1985, she married Thomas P. Wardwell of Islesboro. She devoted much of her spare time and retirement to sewing and making gifts for family members, among the most remarkable being the many quilts she made. She also enjoyed music and singing. She was a member of the Pondicherry chapter of the Eastern Star for much of her adult life. Surviving are her husband of Portland; two daughters, Virginia Ward of Alfred and Grace Cleaves of Portland; a son, George L. Lackee of South Paris; two brothers, Horace I. Newcomb of Addison and Captain Robert C. Newcomb of Lorton, Va.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
