From: Rutland Herald and posted 29 May, 2001 by Patty Pickett at mailing list [VTRUTLAN] Ghouls at Work in Cemetery May 10, 1927 Bernard Fassett and John Gleason to face Court on Desecration Charge. The two men were arrested yesterday by Deputy Sheriff Almo B.Franzoni on a warrant issued by State's Attorney Lawrence C. Jones after they had been caught in the act of digging into a grave at the Evergreen cemetery. Frank R.Shedd, whose residence adjoins the cemetery property, heard a noise in the graveyard late in the night and on going to investigate accompanied by another man, discovered Fassett and Gleason engaged in digging into a recently made mound. They had excavated about three feet into sandy soil when interrupted. Both Fassett and Gleason had been drinking, it is said and when ordered away from the enclosure they became abusive in their language with the result that Fassett was worsted in a fistic (?) fight.
