Alexander M’GRIGOR was b. 30 nov 1772 and died 21oct1839 (Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland (1863)). He was b. and d. in Glasgow (Old Glasgow Exhibition, catalogue). Alexander was maybe b. and chr. 30nov1772 at Glasgow, son of Malcolm McGregor and Margaret Graham (Latter Day Saints). Alexander married 1795 Fanny WILLISON (d. 15jun1837 (Landed Gentry book) or 1857). They married 6jun1795 at Port Glasgow, Ren. (IGI), and 8jun1795 at Glasgow (Latter Day Saints). Alexander McGrigor, writer, Glasgow, married Francis, daughter of John Willison, 8jun1795 at Port Glasgow (Edinburgh Courant, Inverclyde.gov). Frances was youngest daughter of John Willison of Port Glasgow (Landed Gentry). Latter Day Saints: Frances Willison (abt 1776 Glasgow-15dec1837). Alexander M’Grigor, writer, grandfather of Alexander B. M’Grigor had his summer quarters at Langside (Old Glasgow Essays). A portrait of Alex M’Grigor of Kernock (1772 Glasgow-1839 Glasgow), Glasgow writer, was lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition by Mrs. A.B. M’Grigor. Alex married Frances, youngest daughter of John Willison of Port Glasgow, a descendant of the Andersons of Dowhill (catalogue). Scottish archives have the will of Alexander McGrigor, res. at Kernock, Glasgow writer, son is Alexander McGrigor, d. at his house Milton Pl., Glasgow reg. 25jan1840 (scotlandspeople). PO directory 1801: Alex M’Grigor, writer, Donald’s Land, Trongate. In 1811 PO dir: Alex M’Grigor and Patrick Murray, writers, 177 Trongate. PO dir 1820: Alexander M’Grigor, Patr. Murray (ho. 10 Carlton Pl.), Alex M’Grigor, jun., writers, 29 Virginia St. PO dir 1831: Alex M’Grigor, Alex, jun., of M’Grigor, Murray and M’Grigor, West St. Vincent St., ho. 3 Milton Pl. From “Old Glasgow Essays” (1905) by J.O. Mitchell and Glasgow Herald dec1886: M’Grigor, Donald and Co. was made up of 2 good old firms, a M’Grigor and a Donald firm. The 1st was founded at the end of the 18th century by Alexander M’Grigor. He is said to have come from the Loch of Monteith. He was at our grammar school in the class with Alexander Houston, Kirkman Finlay, Sir Neil Douglas and Senex. Mr. M’Grigor assumed his son, Alexander M’Grigor, jun., and his son in law Patrick Murray and firm became M’Grigor, Murray and M’Grigor. Mr. Murray died 1838 and the founder in 1839. Alexander M’Grigor, son, assumed his son Alexander Bennett M’Grigor, now head of M’Grigor, Donald and Co., in 1847 and James Stevenson, his clerk, and the firm became M’Grigors and Stevenson. The 2nd Alex M’Grigor died 1853 and in 1858, with the addition of James Simpson Fleming, the firm became M’Grigor, Stevenson and Fleming. In 1871 the firm was amalgamated to C.D. Donald and Sons. The old firm was founded in 1769 by John Maxwell of Dargavel. Colin Dunlop Donald (1777-1859), his son and grandson, and John Maxwell (b. 1747) are referred to. Stirling, b. 1 May, 1827; m. Oct. 1848, Elizabeth, youngest dau. of the late John Robertson, Esq., merchant, Hamburg, and has issue, i. Margaret-Elizabeth, ii. Janet-Stevenson-Bennett. LINEAGE-ALEXANDER McGRIGOR, Esq. of Kernock, a J.P. for the со. Lanark, and a much esteemed and eminent solicitor in Glasgow, b. 30 Nov. 1772 ; m. Fanny. youngest dau. of John Willison, Esq. of Port Glasgow, lineally descended from the Andersons of Dowhill, a family for a long period of high standing and influence in Glasgow. One of the members of this family, when chief magistrate of Glasgow, saved the cathedral from being destroyed by the over-zeal of the extreme section of the Reformers, By her, who died 15 Dec. 1837, Mr. McGrigor had issue, i. ALEXANDER, his heir. ii, Francis-Willison, who m. 8 June, 1818, the dau. of the late Patrick Murray, Esq. of Glasgow, and d. 24 Dec 1848, leaving issue. i. Margaret, b. Dec. 1797 ; d, Dec. 1798. Mr. McGrigor died 21 Oct. 1839, and was s. by his son, ALEXANDER McGrigor of Kernock, b. 14 July, 1796, solicitor in Glasgow, J.P., and one of the general commissioners of income tax for the county of Lanark, who m. 1st, 7 March, 1826, Janet-Stevenson, dau. of the late William Bennett, Esq. of Moore Place, Glasgow, and by her (who d. 1 June, 1827) had a son, ALEXANDER BENNETT, now of Kernock. He m. 2ndly, Mary Cusine, dau. of William Wedderspoon, Esq. of Tayside, solicitor in Perth, and by her (who d. 18 Oct l8?62) had issue, i. WILLIAM-WEDDERSPOON, b. 20 Oct 1839 ; d, 6 Sept 1842 ii. Mary-Murray. Mr. McGrigor d. 20 Dec. 1853. Arms-Arg., out of a mount, an oak-tree ppr., and a sword in bend, as., ensigned with an antique crown. Crest-A lion's head erased, and crowned with antique crown, ppr. Motto-Ee'n do, and spare not. (The Anderson referred to was probably John Anderson, younger, of Dowhill.) References
