__________________________ This notebook is collecting information about Members of the the Walker Family in and around Goochland County, VA. A research objective is to see if any of the Walkers in this area are related to the Samuel Walker who married Jane Patterson, and settled about 1750 near Natural Bridge in modern Rockbridge County. One of his sons, Joseph, married Susan Willis, whose family came from Goochland County. None of Susan's famlily are known to have settled in Rockbridge. This may indicate that Joseph's marriage to Susan came about through family connections in Goochland, implying that his family came from that area originally. Some, notably Dan Welch, have suggested that since Goochland County lies along roadways connecting the Trans-Appalachian settlements with the tidewater area, trade and business may have led Joseph east, where he met and married Susan. William WALKER b. 1725 d.1806 and had 8 children from his first marriage. I descend from the 2nd marriage to Jane Burton b. ca 1783 as she was 17 & he 75 when they married April 1800 and they had Ann, Sarah, William S(amuel) and Thomas B(urton). Thomas B was born prox 6 weeks after father died. In 1810 Jane took the 4 children to Shelby Co., KY to be with her brother Prettyman Burton. Jane Burton's mother was also a WALKER - Mary Charity WALKER who married Edmund BURTON. The names of the 8 children of the first marriage (wife's name unknown) were Elverton, George, Lewis, Mary, Elizabeth, Ann (yes two Ann's) Peyton & James and all were named in his will. While William was of Goochland it stated Jane was of Louisa County. Elverton went into Nicholas and/or Clay Co. I do have all of William Samuel, Thomas Burton & Sarah's children but cannot find Ann after mid 1820's. William Samuel is my direct line. LINKS: Parents or wife very likely grandchild of Robert Peyton (1640 - 1694) of Virginia,, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Yelverton) Peyton of Rougham, Norfolk, England. Many of their descendants (by first wife) were name Yelverton (Elverton) Peyton _____, for instance, our Elverton P. (Peyton?) Walker. These Peyton's lived in Jamestown, Middlesex Co, Virginia and Gloucester County, VA 1664-1700. MIGRATION: William Walker was not recorded in Goochland County prior to 1778 (see Walker Family Gen Forum May 21, 2002 posted by Pat Griffith, INTERNET). He must have come to Goochland County from some other area other than Goochland County (the Walkers in Goochland County are not related to him). His arrival in Goochland County must have occured sometime during the Revolutionary War. Genetic Evidence (see GenForum) shows that the Walkers of Goochland County are all related to each other, but that William and his family are not part of them. MARRIAGE: VA Book has married in Louisa County, William Walker age 75 of Goochland County and Jane Burton age 17 of Louisa County, married April 1800. Page 3645 Walker,James, Virginia Line, Elizabeth, R11036, soldier was a son of William Walker and as born in Hanover Co., Virginia (no date given) and he lived there until age of 12 then moved to Goochland Co.,Virginia and he lived there at enlistment and he lived there after the Revolution then moved to Louisa Co.,Virginia and in 1809 he moved to Jessamine Co., Kentucky where he applied August 18, 1834 aged about 80 and soldier died there November 27, 1840 as stated by his widow or November 28, 1840 as shown officially , soldier married Elizabeth daughter of Samuel Lemay in 1782 or 1783 and were near neighbors to soldier`s father , in 1834 soldier and wife had no children , widow applied in 1843 in Jessamine Co., Kentucky aged over 86. [edit] Mary RichardsonFrom Mary Richardson, on the Tapistry Mailing list, 7 Augusta 2009 Some time back, I paid a visit to the Goochland Historical Society to see what I could flesh out on the WALKERs. The most revealing finds were: 1. Douglas, William. The Douglas register: being a detailed record of births, marriages and deaths together with other interesting notes, as kept by the Rev. William Douglas, from 1750-1797...An index of Goochland Wills: notes on the French-Huguenot refugees who lived in Manakin-Town. The copy that I reviewed was published by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1973. The copy that is now online on Ancestry ... appears to be the original, which was published by J.W. Fergusson & Sons, Richmond, VA, 1928. [See: Source:Jones, 1928 for bibliographic information.] Library of Congress # 66-30367 ISBN 0-8063-0198-8 Coincidentally, the Rev. Douglas was "born in ye shire of Galloway, near Wigton [sic - now Wigtown], anno 1708...." I copied a lot of WALKER and WILLIS records from this book, but now that they're online, you can check them yourself with an Ancestry.com subscription.
ELRY's research was "done 1990-1994" and is loaded into two large three-ring binders. The following appears on the title page with a 1996 date: These two volumes have been put together expressly for the Goochland County, Virginia Genealogical Society and presented to them by the compiler as an aid to other researchers. The compiler welcomes correspondence with interested persons and anyone with knowledge of errors or additions. In the little time I had, I copied . the table of contents for both volumes . 13 pages of WALKER names, accompanied by brief stats. For instance: "David WALKER (#4366) born ____, Goochland Co VA; child of John WALKER (#4355) and Nancy ??? (#4354)." . a few family group sheets for the earliest WALKERs in ELRY's database. Lorand V. Johnson's 1972 Selected references relating to the ancestry of William and John Johnston, colonial Friends (Quakers) of Virginia is a frequent source. . ELRY's bios of "Early Walkers of Goochland County Virginia," including David, Phillip, John, Thomas, and at least one William. I only had time to copy the intro, which includes a description of the evolution of Goochland Co., plus the WALKER and WILLIS marriage transcripts, 1782-1815.
A handwritten note says "Correction by July 25 - 00" Just one sheet, so I'll transcribe it here: There were four Walker men of approximately the same generation living closely together in the early years in Goochland Co., Northam. They might have been all brothers, or uncles and cousins. They were:
These four Walker men were all neighbors in the Lickinghole district, between 1729 and 1747. They may all have been sons of the elder David, but it seems more likely that William Sr. and Philip were cousins of David and John Sr. who were brothers. In 1731 William sold land to Philip. In 1741 William sold the rest of his Goochland land to John Bybe, his son William Jr.'s uncle by marriage. At this time he seems to have removed to his land in Northampton Co. NC which he may have owned as early as 1717. Son William Jr. who was married to Jane Bayes, daughter of Peter Bayes, stayed in Goochland until about 1747 when his father died in NC. Wm. Jr. was found living with David in the 1746 Tithes List. David's wife Mary was a sister of William's wife Jane Bayles. In 1747 William Walker Sr. of Northampton Co. NC sold to his beloved son William Jr., for five lbs. sterling, all of his estate, both real and personal. The land was located next door to that of Henry Walker, known son of William Walker who died in Henrico Co. 1723, and Elizabeth Warren Walker who died in Goochland in 1728, naming the daughters, and sons Joel and Henry (the youngest?) Henry purchased his land in NC just about the time his mother passed away, and William Sr. and Jr. of Northam lived right next door. I believe that indicates the probability that Wm. Sr. of Northam and NC was eldest brother of Henry. Sylvanus was a brother, b. 1689, not named in his mother's will (his father's will of 1723 was destroyed), but identified by an Henrico deed of 1710. David Sr., b. before 1679 might also have been an elder brother. All of these Walkers were from New Kent Co. in the part that became Hanover Co. in 1721. William Jr. was b. in New Kent Co. in January 1717. He married Jane Bayes by c.1740, and they settled in Bute Co. NC, where William entered the ministry as a Baptist preacher. They had children Peter, Sarah, William, John, Mary, Martha, James, Joel, Lydia, Mercy, and Hope. William died in NC in 1784, but in 1772 a Baptist historian recorded a mini biography of the well beloved preacher. I found the "mini biography" of Rev. Wm WALKER at the Goochland Historical Society, so I copied it. According to whitepages.com, Patricia J. Griffith (Mrs. John E.) still lives at 15038 Blunts Bridge Rd., Doswell, VA 23047. Phone number is unpublished, so I will withhold it here because The Tapestry is a public list.
