Thomas Carter Jr. was born in 1672 in Lancaster Co., Va. He was the second son of Capt. Thomas Carter Sr. and Katherine Dale.
Thomas Jr. married Arabella Williamson, daughter of William Williamson. They reared eight sons.
Their fifth son, Peter, was born May 23, 1706 in Lancaster Co., VA. and died in December of-1789 in Fauquier Co., VA. Peter married Judith Norris.
They had three sons to settle what is now Scott County, VA. in the Rye Cove and Cove Creek areas: Thomas, Joseph, and Norris. They took up land in their respective localities when, the county was Botetourt Co., VA.
Thomas and Arabella's eighth son, Charles, is believed to have married a Morgan. They had three sons to settle on the Clinch River, in the Fort Blackmore area: John, Charles, and Dale.
Charles left no descendants.
Dale was killed in 1776. The account of the murder of Dale is written in the Preston Papers by Major Arthur Campbell to William Preston. "Mr. Carter was about 55 steps from the Fort when he was killed and scalped by Indians."
John Carter married a Miss Blakemore and they had six children. "Southwest Virginia Annals," by Summers gives an account of the tragic death of this mother and children.
"On Oct. 6, 1774, the mother and children were outside their home; Indians killed and scalped them also plundered the house and were preparing to put them inside and burn it, when they were discovered and quickly ran away."
John Carter married a second time to Margaret. They later sold their land and left Scott County. Their descendants are now found in Lee Co., VA. and Harlan Co., Ky.
Thomas Carter Jr. died in Lancaster Co., VA. in 1733.
From his sons, Peter and Charles, most of the Carters of southwest Virginia are descended.

Joseph Ball Carter followed his mother to the Grave on the 1st Day of
July 1700 of a flux
and was burd at So. Marys on ye 2d.

January 14th 1777. Today came a letter from Edward Carter of Lancaster
with the
intelligence that my Brother Mr. Dale Carter Departed this Life on the
12th Day
December last and our cousin 10 days earlier [Thomas Carter written in
margin]. Now
indeed am I the last of my generation--the lone leaf on the tree waiting
the last frost.
Ye Datte of this Holy Book is at it stands from the printer as follows
MDCLXII [1662] in
the year of my God 1775 and in ye year of my Nattral Life 69.
