Rebecca Emeline McClusky

Rebecca Emeline McClusky was born between November 1825 and September 1826 in Alabama.

A possible birth family was enumerated in the 1850 US Census of Pontotoc Co., Mississippi. Pontotoc Co., Mississippi is about 50miles Southeast of Marshall County where Rebecca was later married in December 1845. The family of Eusebius Jackson McClusky and Mary Ann Shropshire of South Carolina. Their older children were born in Alabama and the younger children born in Mississippi. Also in Pontotoc County in 1860 was a 40 year old Benjamin McClusky, born in Alabama, who might be an older brother.

Rebecca E, McClusky first married [ttp://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Stephen_Childress_(2) Stephen B. Childress] on December 3, 1845 in Marshall County, Mississippi.

The Family moves to Illinois

At some point between July 1860 and December 1868, Stephen Childress dies and the family moves to southern Illinois. It is not known if this is before or after Stephen's death.

The five children of Emeline and : Stephen Childress are: Andrew S., Martha Caroline, William J. "Billy", Alfred D., and James F."Jim" Childress.

Rebecca Emeline McClusky Childers and Tapley White Marriage

Rebecca Childers and Tapley White are married on New Year's Eve, December 31,1868 in Alexander County Illinois. This is the second marriage for both Emeline and Tapley.

Thirty year old farmer, Tapley White was earlier enumerated in the July 8, 1860 US Census of Alexander County, Illinois with 26 year old wife Rachell and two children. Their children are 6 year old Margaret and 6 month old Eliza C. White both born in Illinois.

Tapley and Rachell’s daughter Margaret White evidently dies between the 1860 an 1870 census dates, between 8 July 1860 and July 28 1870.

The July 28, 1870 US Census enumeration of Rebecca and Tupley (sic Tapley) White family in Alexander County, Illinois, matches the 1860 Childers and White families above. Note that Tapley is now age 40 but Rebecca aged 35, has not aged since 1860, but still gives her place of birth as Alabama. Her father and mother are recorded as being born in Alabama and Kentucky respectively. Also this is the first use of Rebecca that this researcher has seen. Perhaps Rebecca Emeline was sensitive about being older than her new husband. The three younger Childers children of the 1860 family (Wm, Alfred, and James) are enumerated as White's and all born in ILL? The youngest child, 10 year old Eliza White, is seen to be the child of Rachell and Tapley White and correctly recorded as born in Illinois. Could it be that the four younger children were adopted by their new stepfather? Rebecca Emeline's older daughter, Martha Caroline Childress Oller thought enough of her step-father to name one of her sons, William Tapley Oller.

Emeline and Tapley white had one child, Matilda "Elzetta" White. There seems to be some confusion over who this child married. This researcher has seen three names: (1) a Powless, (2)"Doc" Hargis, and (3) John Edward Hargis.

Emeline White, now 51 years old and born in Alabama is enumerated in the June 22, 1880 US Census of Sandusky Precinct, Alexander County, Illinois without her husband Tapley indicating that he had died. Emeline is with their 8 year old child, Elzetta White, and her 25 year old son, Alfred Childers who is farming. Emeline is living next door to her son, James Childers and two doors from her one year old grandson, George Childers, who is living with his other grandparents, Caroline and D.D.C. Hargis.

In the June 22, 1880 US Census of Sandusky Precinct, Alexander County, next door to William J. Childers, enumerated with J.D.S. Hargis is a 21 year old daughter-in-law Eliza Hargis (IL,IL,IL) and two sons: Adolphis, 21 and Edward, 16. If this is a White daughter, then it would seem to be Eliza White, daughter of Rachell and Tapley White rather than this Elzetta White. This conclusion is based on age and place of birth of her parents.

WorldConnect "Adam's Family" at World Connect Which seems to be well documentd says that Eusebius Jackson McClesky and Mary Ann Shropshire were married in Jackson Co.,GA in 1832. Mary Ann was born 16 April 1813. So unless EJ was married before, this family is not old enough to be correct for Rebecca Emeline McClusky. However the birth year of REM seems to be flexible, if she was born in 1829, per her cemetery marker, Then this family might work. Mother Mary being (1829-1813) 16 at her birth and REM being (1845-1829) 16 at her own marriage.

The 1880 census of Nancy Emelne Childers' mother Emeline White (51-c1829 b. with daughter, Elzeta White (8-c1872 b. Ill) and son Alfred Childress (25-c1855 b.Ark) seems to tie together well. Alfred adopting children of Martha above also seem to tie this record to Emeline McClusky Childers White, mother of Martha.

In 1892, per Alexander Co records, Alfred D Childers adopted three young children of Martha Oller.

   This agrees with the facts that Martha died in 1887 and her husband Frank Oller died in 1891.

Martha named a son Wm Tapley Denfip so this is a strong clue to her step father being Tapley White.

BK-023 gives the name of Emaline White as the mother of Martha Caroline Childers. (White was from her second marriage. aeh~2008)

MN-215 indicates that the name is Rebecca Emaline "Jane" McClusky White Childers.

(The "Jane" most likely comes from my bad reference LD-060 and s/b Rebecca Emeline McClusky Childers White aeh~2008) also Ancestry

The 1850 census of Andrew Childers (30- c1820 b.MO), Jane Childers (26-c1824 b. Ala), Alfred (6-c1844), James (4-c1846 b.Ark), Mary (2 - c1848), William (1-c1849) and misplaced Martha (2/12-c1850) Now this 1850 family seems to be the wrong one.!!!
