The Hauenstein's lived in Fort Wayne until probably some time in 1877. Julius is listed as a shoemaker in the 1877 city directory. By 1878 he was working as a shoemaker in Memphis, Tennessee living at 83 Second Street. By May of 1879 the Hauenstein children were back in Fort Wayne in the custody of Laura Keller's parents, Charles and Elizabeth Keller. In the guardianship papers filed by Charles Keller in 1886 indicate that he took guardianship of the Hauenstein children after their parents death. In the late summer and early fall of 1878 one of the worst Yellow Fever epidemics in history hit Memphis killing 5,150 of the city's 50,000 residents. In a book published in 1879 all of the dead in the Memphis Yellow Fever epidemic are listed and there are four individuals with the name "Hammerstein" listed living either at 83 Second Street or Second Street: Laura, Emily, Julia and J. It is an assumption that Julia and Emily are daughters of Laura and Julius, as I haven't seen them mentioned in Fort Wayne birth records, although I think it is a reasonable one.

  2.   1880census the boys Julius and Carl are living with grandparents karl Ludwig and Elizabeth Keller. It is reported that Laura and Julius died in 1897. Gaurdianship papersfound in the Allen Co Court assign Karl Keller sr as guardian for the boys. Another guardian is named for Julius after the death of Karl sr. It is suggested that Laura gave birth to a child, but both parents died, so sadly child died too.
