Jack served in World War II in the U. S. Army.

In 1950, Gerald was married to Harriet and living at 1522 East Creighton Avenue. He was a press operator at Wayne Pump.

Jack and Harriet had five sons.

Jack's obituary reads, "GERALD P. "JACK" OBERLEY, 71, died at noon Saturday at home. Born in Fort Wayne, he lived in the Monroeville area most of his life before moving to Fort Wayne eight years ago. He was a World War II Army veteran and retired in 1982 as a painter for Koorsen Decorating Inc., of Fort Wayne. Surviving are five sons, Patrick J., James L. and Greg, all of Fort Wayne, Frank of Elkhart and Jerry; three brothers, twin brother Harold, and Richard and Elmer Jr., all of Monroeville; five sisters, Maybelle Feasby of Columbia City, Doris Sephel of Columbus, Ohio, Jeanette Castle, and Mary Ann Walker and Carol Rose Mills, all of Fort Wayne; and several grandchildren. Prayer services at 9:20 a.m. Saturday at Marquart & Jacobs Funeral Home, Monroeville, and at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Louis Besancon Catholic Church, New Haven. Calling from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial in the church cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 2457 of New Haven. Memorials to the church."
