Note that this discussion of the relationship of one branch of the Cowan's gives its descent from a brother of Niall of the Nine Hostages. This was written long before YDNA became available as a genealogical tool, and before the recognition that fully ten percent of the male Irish population shares this line of descent. Members of the Seven Brother Cowans group are now known to share the characteristic signature for descendants of Niall of the Nine hostages.
