Discussion

Person:John Campbell (205) is believed to have settled Beverley's manor in Augusta County sometime before his death in 1741, along with several of his sons. John is the grandsire of several noteable individuals who played a prominent role in the Revolution. Perhaps most notable among them is General William Campbell who led Patriot forces at the pivotal Battle of King's Mountain in 1780. The Patriot victory at Kings Mountain led directly to Cornwallis' surrender at the Siege of Yorktown the following year.

The identity of John Campbell's ancestry is currently unknown, though the literature includes many competing lineages. The most prominent views are:

1.Drumabodan Lineage: Source:Pilcher, 1911, who identifies his parents as Duncan Campbell and Mary McCoy, of Drumabodan, Kilmarcrenan Parish, Donegal Ireland

2.Coleraine lineage: Charles Campbell of Ironton Ohio, as given by Source:Pilcher, 1911:193, who also identifies John's parents as Duncan Campbell and Mary McCoy, but places them in Coleraine, County Londonderry, Ireland.

3. Lord Ormellie Lineage. Various genealogists identify Duncan Campbell, as "Lord Ormellie" of the Campbells of Bredalbane, Scotland.

4.Ruby Campbell Lineage: Source:Campbell, 2001, who puts forward the view that John was the son of John Campbell and Mary McCoy, based on a supposed late 18th Century lineage of unknown provenance recovered at an "auction".
