WeRelate:Suggestions/Graphical Interface

I'm new here, but don't see a graphical interface for adding family (such as what Geni has). But, I found the following site that is open-source, free, feature rich and appears to provide the same functionality as Geni. It's also written in PHP and JavaScript so should already be compatible with the WeRelate site.

This link takes you to the demo link. But, Wow!!

Try the Family Tree Explorer. Go to a page, say Person:John Adams (29) and under the infobox containing the Person's name and vitals, click the link that says Family Tree. --Jrich 13:37, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

I received a reply to my earlier message about a graphical interface, but when viewing the reply did not see a "REPLY" button. Therefore, I'm starting a second message due to my ignorance about how to reply.

In any case, I was able to find the Family Tree Explorer that Jrich had mentioned, but it still doesn't seem to related to what I was referring.

First, I don't see a Family Tree link on any of my own pages, but then I only have created perhaps six users at this point. Maybe I have neglected something to be able to see that link.

Second, the Family Tree Explorer seems to be only an explorer, not an editor. It would be nice to be able to add people like in Geni where everything is graphical. Geni starts with a box which has arrows for adding parents, siblings, spouses and children. I can add information and see the links graphically and instantly. It is true that I have to delve into each individual person to add all the details, but for simply fleshing out the tree it is really quite easy to use.

Am I missing something or does WeRelate not have that sort of feature? If not, that's what I was trying to point out that the site I linked to had.

You reply by editing a page and adding your comments after the ones you are addressing. You should sign your posts by including the --~~~~ symbol at the end of your post which will be converted to your name and a timestamp when you save your changes to the page. This is pretty standard wiki behavior.
I looked at the link you posted and it looked exactly like FTE except that it had icons whereas FTE the boxes in the graphical tree contain text. When you click on the links in FTE they take you to a text-based page on the person, just like clicking on the box in your example. You can click the plus signs on either side to expand the explorer to show more generations, either forward or backward.
Your pages do have the Family Tree link. It is under the colored infobox at the top of the page before the "Facts and Events" header. I checked several and they all had it. You don't have a robust tree so it doesn't show off the features as well as the John Adams example above which has several generations of ancestors in the tree.
You can click on any of the people shown in the explorer and then use the Edit function to edit their data. WeRelate is built on wikipedia software which assumes the underlying data is composed of pages of an encyclopedia, so it is heavily biased towards the textual, and in practice, the information entered into WeRelate is indeed largely textual (dates, place names, given names, names of sources, narrative about a person's life) though many poster effectively add images to enhance the pages. Admittedly I have been using the system so long it seems like second nature, but picking a date off a graphical calendar (arrowing through to the correct year, then to the correct month, and picking the desired date) would be much slower than simply typing the few characters "31 Aug 1788" needed to specify a date. Etc. So it is very unclear to me how adding a graphical editor to add textual data is really easier? I think more "wizards" for various source types and some of the other complicated features could help, but that doesn't require graphics per se. Perhaps more detailed suggestions of envisioned improvements would be useful. I believe the WeRelate pages all have textual links that I suspect provide all the functionality of the Geni arrows, once one learns the purpose and use of all the various features on the page. For example, clicking the text link "Add Parents and Siblings" is how you add parents, presumably the same as clicking one of the arrows on a Geni page. --Jrich 04:33, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

As JRich pointed out, this feature already exists in WeRelate (select the Family tree link, not Family Tree Explorer, which is yet another graphical interface within WeRelate). I am going to archive this suggestion, along with Graphical Interface 2, which is the same request.--DataAnalyst 22:58, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
