Next step: Review your GEDCOM [26 June 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded ExportJune10.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate lines and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

William Sherrill [1 July 2010]

Hello, I noticed recent chages you made to William Sherrill, adding a different set of parents. Do you have records/documentation to support these different parents? Most researchers seem to agree that his parents were Samuel Sherrill and Margaret Parsons, please let me know what documentation you have to support this.

Also, I noticed the addition of duplicate parents to Augustine Smith. I have merged those parents with his exising ones.

Also, you added several duplicate childen to Thomas Carter and Arabella Williamson. The changes to this family have been rolled back to the former page by another user that had done much of the work on this family.

In the future, we'd ask that if in the gedcom review process that you find substantial differences with information already added by others, that you compare your sources/records with the ones listed. Many of the trees/lineage found on sites like Ancestry and Rootsweb have major flaws and errors, so it is highly advised that those secondary sources not be used without verifying with other sources.

Thanks and best regards,

Jim Volunteer Administrator on WeRelate--Delijim 09:16, 1 July 2010 (EDT)

Hello, I received your message on my talk page regarding William Sherrill. I think that the basic problem with your gedcom is that it has not been thoroughly researched and may contain some "family tradition" which has been handed down to you. I'd suggest that before you attempt to load any other families onto WeRelate that you only load those families that you are sure have been thoroughly researched, not those that have information that may or not be correct. If, in the gedcom review process, you see that your information differs substantially from what is already on WeRelate, I'd highly suggest that you do not load that gedcom. At that point, you should go back and check your sources (hopefully some primary sources with records proving those relationships) and contact the persons that have already added that information onto WeRelate, to compare notes with them.

I think you'll find that most of the contributors on WeRelate will be very helpful in providing their sources and information, but if the only source you have is "your daughter's in-laws" (not a primary source), your information will probably not stand up against someone else with documented sources. I don't know if I've been able to assist you much, but if you're confused about what I've posted above, you might want to take a basic genealogy course in your area, in order for you to understand how important good research practices and documenting sources are to genealogy today.

Best regards,

Jim:)--Delijim 16:59, 1 July 2010 (EDT)
