Rachael Tullis b.Jul 23,1845; Muskogee County, Georgia [18 February 2015]

Tom,

Rachel Tullis b. Jul 23, 1845 in Muskogee County, Georgia is my great grandmother. My grandmother was born in Bienville, Louisiana on July 16, 1887. She was the daughter of Charles H. Wilkerson b, Oct 3 1859 in Honey Grove, Fannin County, Texas and Rachel Tullis. My question is where do you get the information that she was marries to a James Wilkerson? I have my grandmother's birth records and death certificate. I also have my great grandmother Rachel Tullis Wilkerson's Death Certificate. She was living with my grandparents in 1920 when she passed away in Dallas, Texas. My grandfather, Henry Hickerson Haygood is the informant; he has his mother-in-law's father's name correct on Grannie Rachel's Death Certificate; it says, "Moses Tullis"; but he is incorrect on the name given for Grannie Rachel's mother. It says:"Maiden name of Mother: (Myra Hawkins)" but it should be Mariah Maddox. That is how records get misinformed. Grannie Rachel's mother passed away in 1889; so My grandfather never actually met her and probably misunderstood what her name was because he did not hear well. Nevertheless, Mariah Maddox Tullis is my great great grandmother and Moses Tullis is my great great grandfather who passed away in Bienville, Louisiana in 1869. The 1880 Census record shows that Mariah, Rachel, Catherine, and Amelia were living together in Bienville, Louisiana; so my great grandmother, Rachel Tullis, met my great grandfather, Charles H. Wilkerson after 1880 and my grandmother was born in 1887 and she she had a sister named Rachel Wilkerson b.1888 in Indian Territory and died as an infant. My grandmother used to tell me about her father when I was growing up. He left Grannie Rachel to raise my grandmother alone but he did give them a place to live in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas. My grandmother told me about visiting her father in Indian Territory when she was growing up. He married Katie Girty and had a son named Walter Wilkerson b. 1889 in Indian Territory and John Wilkerson b. 1891 in Indian Territory. Grannie Rachel was heart broken over him leaving her for Katie. She never married; so where did James Wilkerson come into the picture? If you know more about the story than I do, I would appreciate you letting me know. My email address is thompsonrentals@earthlink.net.

Sincerely,

D'Gena Thompson (Maiden Name: Haygood)--DGena 22:41, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

D'Gena: There was a Haygood who served in the Civil War with Sarah Jane Bowers Tullis's brother (my 2g grandfather), John Bowers, who accompanied John and his brothers to Arkansas. Was this one of your relations? Also, John and Sarah's uncle, William Bowers, married a Thompson -- Judy -- in Lincoln Co., GA, and John's son, William Peyton Bowers, married an Emma Thompson. I also suspect the guy who witnessed Dr. Tullis's will, Jackson M. Gill, was related to my family.--Rbowers 03:06, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

Dear Tom, My Great Grandmother is Rachel L. Tullis. Where does this James Wilkerson come from that she allegedly was married to? My Great Grandfather was Charles H. Wilkerson, but I have not found a record of their marriage as yet. My Grandmother was born in Bienville, Louisiana in 1887, but Grannie Rachel had 3 children born before my grandmother. She had a daughter born in Indian Territory and they also named her Rachel but she died as an infant the year before my grandmother was born. There were also 2 other children but I have not been able to find any records to show what their names were. It appears that My Great Grandfather left her before my grandmother was born because the record says she was "single" at the time my grandmother was born. The 1900 Census record shows my grandmother was the only child living with Grannie Rachel in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas, and my grandmother was 13 years of age then, and Grannie Rachel claimed to be a "widow" because it was easier to say that rather than to have to explain that he left her for a younger woman, Katy, and had 2 more sons with her; Walter Wilkerson and John Wilkerson. She never got over it and she never married anyone else after my grandmother was born. She did get some support from him and that is why they were living in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas, where my grandmother grew up and married my Grandfather. Grannie Rachel was living with my Grandmother, Charlsey Ann Wilkerson Haygood,("Annie"), and my Grandfather, Henry Hickerson Haygood, when she passed away in 1920 in Dallas, Texas. My Grandfather was listed as the informant on Grannie Rachel's Death Certificate. The name that he gave for her mother on the death certificate was Myra Hawkins which is incorrect also. Her mother was Mariah Maddox Tullis and her father was Moses Tullis IV, son of Moses Tullis III and Polly Blaylock Tullis of Edgefield, South Carolina.

I called the County Clerk's office in Quitman, Texas to ask if there was a way to get Grannie Rachel's Death Certificate corrected to show that her mother was Mariah Maddox Tullis instead of "Myra Hawkins". She said they have a form that I can fill out and send to Austin to get the correction made so I will do that. I have no earthly idea where he came up with that name. Grannie Mariah died before my grandmother was born so obviously he didn't know her. They didn't have the advantage of looking up ancestors on computers like we have today.

I know that you and I are related but I'm not sure what our relationship is exactly. I would guess that we are probably cousins but I haven't figured that out yet. I found another cousin, Gary Clampitt, from the Wilkerson side of the family. We have exchanged addresses and phone numbers and we are both the same age. I love finding family relatives that I didn't know I had. I wish that I could have the opportunity to meet them in person.

If you have access to any records that may help clear up my question about where this "James Wilkerson" spouse info came from, I would appreciate hearing from you. I suspect that the record may be confused somehow. Maybe she had a son that was named James Wilkerson. That is the only thing that makes sense to me.

If you like, you may contact me by email. My email is thompsonrentals@earthlink.net.

Yours truly,
