How to add an ancestor? [11 March 2009]

Steven Kisducak is my great grandfather. He is the parent of Joseph Frank Kisducak

Hello, welcome to WeRelate!

When I look at your grandfather's page Person:Joseph Kisducak (1), it looks good so far. I believe the problem you may be having is when you go into your great-grandfather's page Family:Steven Kisducak and Unknown (1). In order to add a Person Page for Steven, you need to:

You see, after you add a Family Page, you need to then go into that page and add the Husband and the Wife. Doing this will create Person Pages for each of them.

Feel free to post here with more questions!--Jennifer (JBS66) 08:32, 11 March 2009 (EDT)

Geez~! How utterly convoluted! This takes forever and it certainly isn't intuitive. I don't know....--Sharrow 08:39, 11 March 2009 (EDT)

You know though, once you do a few, it'll seem easy as pie (where did that phrase come from anyway??)

I suggest browsing around the Portal pages, as they provide a good overview of things.

Best wishes, --Jennifer (JBS66) 08:48, 11 March 2009 (EDT)

Red-linked Places on your James Anderson page [13 March 2009]

Sylvia,

Those categories at the bottom of your Person:James Anderson (118) page are created automatically from places that you have entered on your page. The reason it says Ukraine, is because one of your towns is not entered according to WeRelate's format, so the program is trying to match it up the best it can. Sometimes though, it guesses wrong!

If you look at your page, see how the place names are in red? We call that a red-link. A red-link essentially leads to nowhere, and indicates there is a problem.

Here is the first place that is causing you trouble: Kansas City, KA - The program couldn't find Kansas City, KA (mainly because the abbreviation for Kansas is KS).

So, go to your Person:James Anderson (118), click on edit, and delete what is in the death place field. Begin typing in Kansas City, a drop-down box will appear with options, of which you can choose the correct place. You can also type in Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas, United States. Our U.S. places follow the format Town, County, State, United States.

As for your second red-link, Highland Park, Kansas City, Kansas. We don't have a place page for a Highland Park in Kansas City (I'm assuming this is a cemetery). We don't have many cemeteries entered yet, so you will need to add a place page for that. See Cemeteries as Places for instructions. The title for that page will need to be Highland Park, Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas, United States.

Let me know if you have further questions.--Jennifer (JBS66) 15:32, 13 March 2009 (EDT)
