Next step: Review your GEDCOM [3 May 2016]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded KettermanKeenerBoggsHedrick.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two months to give you time to review it. If your GEDCOM does not contain at least one date and place for each person, preferably with at least one primary or secondary source it will possibly be rejected, See the help pages for how you should prepare your GEDCOM prior to uploading.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Finding Duplicates [18 October 2016]

I saw your new suggestion page about finding duplicates but I wasn't sure quite what you were talking about. You asked "how do I go about finding duplicates in the tree that I uploaded?" I wonder if you are asking how to find duplicates while in the process of reviewing a recently uploaded GEDCOM that has not yet been approved and imported. I'm referring to the actions you take with the eight tabs shown when you click the "Click here to review your GEDCOM" message link. So, are you wondering how to do that? --robert.shaw 22:45, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

Duplicates [20 October 2016]

Hi Danny, Just wanted to give you a welcome from another former West Virginian! Having struggled to learn wiki and how to navigate this site, I feel your pain. But I love the collaborative one-tree concept and so I have kept coming back. There is an easy way to find dups but it can't be done until 24 hours after a GEDCOM upload. The time lag gives the server a chance to get new info into the system. Just go the the menu at the top of the page, click on My Relate/Show duplicates. When you find possible duplicates, take note of the person's numbers, then go to that menu at the top of the page, click on Admin/Compare pages. Below the family window is a table to enter the person's page title - that means their first and last name including the number in parenthasis, like Joseph Smith (5) and Joseph Smith (2). That allows you to compare the two and their families side by side. If you determine they are the same person, click on the two 'match' boxes under the names, scroll to bottom of page and click 'Prepare to merge' button. Finish the merge on the next page. After merging, it is a good practice to go the merged page to verify that it looks as it should. --janiejac 18:23, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

Problems you are having [20 October 2016]

Hi. I've looked at your posts about the problems you are having and thought I would see if I could help. I'm going to start with some basics, but I won't go into tons of detail because there are instructions elsewhere.

First, as far as I can tell, you have not got past uploading your GEDCOM into a "holding area" where

  • errors have to be fixed
  • you have to indicate how your file fits in with the data already in WeRelate

Therefore, I am going to treat all your questions as relating to that stage of the GEDCOM upload. Apparently, you must be used to websites that use buttons for actions. WeRelate uses links - that is, each action just looks like a web link, just like the ones on the left side of your User Page. For example, to fix an error, you select the error and the details show in the bottom portion of the screen. There is an edit link immediately below the title (in the bottom portion of the screen). It's small, but it's there. If you need to switch to another page to fix the actual error (let's say you were taken to a Family page but the error is on one of the Person pages), you click the name of the person and you will be taken to that page. Again, the edit link is immediately below the title.

You also asked about finding duplicates. If you mean duplicates within the file you have uploaded, they will automatically show up on the Warnings tab. I should mention that WeRelate only identifies potential duplicate couples, not individuals. This is intentional (at this time) - automatic identification of individuals is a complex proposition (usually with a lot of false hits) and WeRelate has not gone down that path. Personally, I use my desktop software to help me find duplicates, and it can be a time-consuming process because there is no black magic to make it easy.

Once you have eliminated all errors in your GEDCOM file (you don't have to address all the warnings and alerts, because the data might be just fine, but you should look at them to see if anything needs to be fixed), then you should review place name matching (Places tab). If you don't, it is possible that your "Southampton, Pennsylvania" (as an example) could match to "Southampton, Somerset, Pennsylvania" when you meant it to match to "Southampton, Franklin, Pennsylvania".

You should also match Sources, but many don't. If you don't match Sources, WeRelate will just set up all your sources as MySources. This is a disservice to other users, but not the end of the world.

Once all that is done, you have to essentially say how your GEDCOM file fits into WeRelate data. You do that by going to the Family Matches tab. You are required to review and resolve every item on that tab. This is to prevent people from adding new pages that duplicate existing pages. For every item there, you have to declare it as either a match or not a match.

In many cases, there is only one potential match in WeRelate, but sometimes there are more than one. Therefore, the first thing you have to do is to select the WeRelate page(s) for which you are making your declaration - if any page is a match, select that one. You do that at the top of the screen (where it says Match). Then at the bottom of the screen, you select either Match or Not a Match.

If you declare your page to be a match with an existing WeRelate page, you will be taken to a page that allows you to indicate which of your data items you want to apply to the existing page. If your page has nothing new to offer, you don't have to update the existing WeRelate page. But this is your opportunity to, for example, add a deceased date that was not already there. Just check the box beside each of your data items that you want to update the existing page with. Be judicious - there is no need for 2 different formats of the same date, or to add "abt 1809" when the existing page already says "abt 1810". Once you have selected the items to update, click Update at the bottom of the screen.

Hope this is helpful - I have to run.--DataAnalyst 00:10, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

Error importing GeorgeWashingtonKetterman2016-10-16.ged [21 October 2016]

We had an error while attempting to import your GEDCOM. This is most likely our fault. We will review the error and should have your pages ready tomorrow (or Monday if tomorrow falls on a weekend). There is no need to re-import your GEDCOM file.

For questions or problems, leave a message for Dallan or send an email to dallan@WeRelate.org.
