Naming conventions [6 July 2011]

Hello, I am a volunteer admin here at WeRelate. I noticed that you are renaming and creating pages with titles that contain Jr. Sr. and Captain. Please review our naming conventions here. Person pages are titled with Firstname Lastname only. All other information (including alternate name spellings) can be placed in the name fields from within the edit screen. Please review your contributions here and rename any pages to remove the extraneous information. Let me know if you have any questions, thank you, --Jennifer (JBS66) 15:18, 6 July 2011 (EDT)

Addition of parents without information/sources [9 July 2011]

Hello, I noticed that you added parents to Sithia Short, without any additional information (parent's birthdates, dates of death, place of residence, etc), or sources. It would be useful to other's researching this family if you could add what the sources of your information is, so they can assess it's credibility/reliability. We would ask in the future that you only add families with proper dates and sources.

Thanks for your assistance and best regards,

Jim

Re-naming Families with titles "Sr." in family name [9 July 2011]

Hello again, I noticed that you changed the family name of John McMillian and Anne Harrison to include John's title of "Sr.". Please do not include titles of any kind in family names, per Help:FAQ#How_do_I_create_a_person_or_family_page.3F the naming conventions at WeRelate, which states the following:

Do not include middle names, titles, suffixes or prefixes.

I also noted that you did not agree with the spelling of John McMillian's name. I've corrected it to "McMillian" per several records in Prince William County, and also added "McMillion" (the name you preferred) as an alternate spelling.

Please consult the "Frequently Asked Questions" section if you need help on how to add/name family or person pages in the future.

Thanks and best regards,

Jim:)--Delijim 10:49, 9 July 2011 (EDT)

'Correct' Spelling [10 July 2011]

Hi Sharon, got your messages, regarding the 'correct' spelling of surnames, remember that since people didn't carry around driver's licenses or birth certificates in the 1700's that spelling was mostly "up to the eye of the beholder" and many surnames underwent changes, especially in records, etc. It's best rather than changing submissions that have already been worked on by others, to add what you determine to be 'correct' as the alternate spelling, rather than getting to "surname wars" and re-naming each page that you consider to be 'incorrect'. Since this is a "wiki" or cooperative website, researchers are working together to (hopefully) get as close to "correct" as possible, using hopefully primary sources to guide them. Adding primary sources (showing the spelling used in those sources usually helps to bolster your case for the 'more correct' spelling... :)

If you have any questions on naming conventions on WeRelate, feel free to consult the Frequently Asked Questions section anytime.
