Next step: Review your GEDCOM [1 September 2012]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded 845053_574596w07c54t8s454223c.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Need more information [4 September 2012]

Hello. Thank you for submitting your gedcom file. I am afraid that there is a problem. WeRelate is based on a shared database and creates a web page for each person. In your file, most of the people don't have events containing dates and places which would enable someone to identify the person. We will not be able to use this file as it is. However, we do encourage you to work on your data. You will need to add at least one date and place (enter the place name as "Jurisdiction, Country") for most of the people in your file. Where such dates are not available you may use an estimated date, i.e. "abt 1830". We also strongly encourage the use of sources. You may like to browse the existing pages and try creating a few by hand to get familiar with how WeRelate works. A list of recent featured pages is available from the WeRelate home. These will provide some examples of what is possible. And, finally, as a reminder, we do not create pages for living people. If you have any questions about your gedcom, you can reply here.--sq 19:28, 4 September 2012 (EDT)

Merging & pages for living people [7 September 2012]

Hello Rsivan, I noticed your note in the recent edits about duplicate pages for Erwin Offenbacher. Rather than deleting the vital information from his page, please use WeRelate's merging utility to combine the pages into one. When two families are matches, like Family:Erwin Offenbacher and Hadassah Bacharach (1) and Family:Erwin Offenbacher and Hadassah Bachrach (1), go to one of the Family pages and click on More>Find Duplicates. Then, click the check box next to the duplicate family and follow the instructions on the next screens.

Also, as I noted on Solveig's talk page, since your GEDCOM file was missing so many dates, WR's importer did not exclude the living people in your file. WeRelate's policy does not allow pages for people who are still living, so these pages will need to be deleted manually. To do this, you can click on More>Delete from the Person and Family pages of people who are still living. If you have any questions at all, just let me know! Thank you, --Jennifer (JBS66) 06:35, 7 September 2012 (EDT)

Thank you, Jennifer.

The pages I have deleted were those I myself created, and I am still not sure how they became duplicated. However, I am the source of all the data in all of them, so there is little point in merging them automatically (one is simply a subset of the other).

I am not aware of any living people in the pages I have added, except as references to living children and spouses of the deceased. Does such reference conflict with WeRelate guidelines? I think such information is relevant for identifying the referencing person: sometimes the name alone is insufficient, and not all the dates are given, so names of siblings, spouses or children can narrow the search.

This family (and their descendants) and this person are examples that I thought could be living. To my knowledge, references to living people are allowed, it's just that Person and Family pages cannot be created for them. --Jennifer (JBS66) 09:04, 7 September 2012 (EDT)

Dear Jennifer,

Noa Sivan (ne Offenbacher) was killed in a motor accident on 10 of September, 1979. I'll fix that if the data is missing from the page.

As for the children of Malka Blechman, I will try to obtain their dates from living family members, but I am quite certain that none of them are still around.

Thanks, Ronny--Rsivan 17:35, 7 September 2012 (EDT)
