First Attempt of Creating Complete Place Page [4 September 2021]

Hi Pkeegstra & Jennifer

I just created a Place page and am looking for someone to take a look at it to critique. It is the first time I am attempting to create a Page that will reflect the detail that I think WeRelate wants to see. I basically plagiarised the way that another page was created using computer language that I don't yet understand, but I tried to copy it Rosedale Memorial Park the best I could. The page I have been working on is Hooker Cemetery, Wayland, Allegan, Michigan, United States. I would appreciate it if you would not hold back your suggestions both to make it complete and correct, but to also suggest ways that may make it easier/simpler. It took me over 4 hours to get as far as I did (but it was the first time).

I played with WeRelate about a year ago and quite honestly, it intimidated the heck out of me (still does)! I decided it was too detailed for me, so I went with FamilySearch for a while and also tried numerous other desktop and online solutions, but I kept feeling the other programs didn't connect me with other researchers, (not a wiki), and are too sloppy with their sourcing. With WeRelate, I trust that the work being done by others is factually correct, and I hope to be able to add to it, instead of constantly having to re-check the current work, but at the same time, I don't want to make more work for others when I'm the one that doesn't do something correctly.

Sorry for the long expression of insecurity :) I am asking you for this assistance because you both seem to be watching most all the people on my portion of the tree and you obviously have a lot of experience. I picked this particular talk page because I didn't want too many watchers... If you have the time, thanks for your help!

OK. I saw your page cloning Rosedale Memorial Gardens and remapped it to the existing page for that cemetery here (note that this cemetery, where my grandmother is buried, is in Ottawa County, not Grand Rapids). I will gladly give you feedback to document a new cemetery such as Hooker Cemetery. --pkeegstra 11:29, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

I found your page for Hooker Cemetery here. While the page looks really good, I have a few suggestions about the name. Most importantly, its actual location as would be reflected in a legal deed (which is the standard we try to apply), is Leighton Township. (Also, there is a tiny typo.). So I would suggest renaming it to Place:Hooker Cemetery, Leighton, Allegan, Michigan, United States. I can do that on your behalf if you would like, or you could try it yourself to become familiar with the WR system. Which would you prefer?

I also looked at the page for Henry Veenstra to see if I could remind myself why I was interested in it. I found connections to the Lindemulders and the Holtrops, both of which are families in my church. My own Veenstras are from Aduard, Groningen, so for sure they are no connection to yours from Achtkarspelen, Friesland. I do see that one of my Dad's uncles by marriage is a Buist.

And one more tiny suggestion: some of the people working in the Netherlands like to fill out the description field in wedding events after 1811 with 'çivil'. (See example here.) (And other people consider that overkill, since every government marriage record since 1811 in the Netherlands refers to the civil wedding.)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll go ahead and make the changes. I struggled with the question of "Hooker" cemetery or "Leighton", so I went with the sign on the building. Where/how did you find the legal deed to the cemetery? (PKB - STOP and go into "Edit" mode before proceeding, or else it will just show links and I don't know how to stop this!). Some other questions: 1. What is the easy way to start another paragraph on the page? 2. On the "Rosedale Memorial Park" cemetery page, there were two types of resource coding that I can't figure why the difference. One was "*Find A Grave: Rosedale Memorial Park" and the other was "*". They both take you to a website, but the coding (not sure if that's the right term) are very different. Whats the difference? 3. What does the vertical symbol "|" do? 4. What does the "*" do in the front of a source URL and also the "[[ ]" and "[ ]" and "{{ }}" and "{ }"? 5. I have found that a LOT of source URL's take you to a defunct page. What's the point of listing a source that supposably will (should) last forever, but doesn't? Seems like a .jpg on the page would serve better since it shouldn't ever get detached?!? 6. Is a MySource page private (as in only I can see it)? The Help pages say it is for personal use, but doesn't specify if private. 7. Is a Ancestry source considered a legit source? I notice the lack of seeing them on this site. 8. Where is the best place for me to ask questions like these - moving forward (obviously this page of yours is not the normal process and I'm sure I will have more questions in the future). 9. Do you have templates you use for the different Page additions for different scenarios?

Thanks again for your suggestions and patience. Oh yeah, do you have a name you want to share? If not, I understand... Chris--Chris 21:12, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

I tried to find where to edit the Place Name, but could not locate the place to do this. I saw the typo and figure I/we can change it at the same time. Where do you change the Place Name?--Chris 22:01, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
