Common lines [20 November 2008]

So which lines do we have in common? So far, most of the families I have in my duplicates list are in the 1500-1600s back in England. Also had overlap with Dabneys in early VA, Quakers in Guilford, NC and Baileys.

I'm finding it confusing learning to use all the features in WeRelate since I don't have any other Wiki experience. I have figured out that there is a difference between adding a new topic to a talk page and adding a comment to an existing topic. You did the later on my talk page and I've done the former on yours. :-) Dallan is very nice and helpful when you have problems and ask him questions. I'm just starting to get to know the other old timers around here. Bev--Bevbh 13:16, 20 November 2008 (EST)

Hang in there.... [5 November 2009]

I saw your remarks on the watercooler. I can't really add much to what others have said, but will try anyway. I'm a professional software engineer, and when I first came to WR, I found it daunting too. In hindsight though, that was because I had expectations based on previous systems. WR breaks with a lot of those previous modes of operation though, in order to crack a very tough and long-standing problem: moving beyond GEDCOM exchange as a means of "cooperation" in genealogy work. That alone is a highly worthy goal, and worth your time get over the initial steep learning curve (believe me, it does smooth out). It also is able to do this using an increasingly common and standard technology for web content creation - "wiki" (also worth learning whether you're using it w/WR or not). WR also automatically solves another important problem: how to save your rich data (including any sort of image or media data you like) for future generations, under a real commercial backup regime (ever worry about what would happen if you lost your home drive?).

Anyway, I just wanted to commiserate a little and try to encourage you too; you're taking on several things at once when you join WR w/o a wiki background, so it can be a little harder. Still, IT IS WORTH IT!. Good Luck...
