Swearingen/Van Swearingen [3 January 2011]

Hello, I noticed that you had this family's surname listed as "VanSwearingen" instead of Swearingen:

John Swearingen and Catherine Stull

Can you share the source of your records indicating that they went by "Van Swearingen" instead of "Swearingen"? Most records that I've seen indicate Swearingen. Perhaps you've gotten information from someone confused by the father of John, "Van Swearingen", thinking that it was a surname?

"Early Families of Southern Maryland", Volume 2 By Elise Greenup Jourdan, "History of Western Maryland: being a history of Frederick", Volume 1 By Helen Long, John Thomas Scharf, John Thomas Scharfas, well as other prominent sources, primarily list their surname as "Swearingen".

When possible, please try to use the "most commonly accepted surname" when adding persons to WeRelate.

Thanks and best regards,

Jim

John Major's Birth location [23 November 2012]

Good afternoon,

I have a citation for John Major's birth date, but none for the location. Jamestown was founded in 1607 and we have pretty good records of who settled there. I think the best we can do for John's birth location is unknown.(But probably England)

Here is a John Major as headright for Thomas Flint in 1628:
