Antonia de Hainaut and Rosamunde van Vlaanderen [26 March 2016]

Hi John,

Some time ago you asked me about the primary sources for these ladies.

First, let's say it is very surprising how fast parrotting can be. These pages were created not even half a year ago.

The source I have used is Schmelzer, a dutchman who has worked on analysing and comparing several chronicles around the family Van Egmond.

Fact is, there are no primary sources on these high nobles in Holland before 1200. As there are almost none in Holland at all. There are no contemporary chroniclers either, so the best you can do compare and analyse non contemporary chroniclers, that apparently wrote down oral history. Unreliable? Not necessarily, as "Roots" shows.

What I have done with most relationships in the family before 1200, is only show a person in the Egmond family, unless there are other sources showing a wife of in another family as well (like Billung or Vlaanderen). For some reason I haven't done so for these two (and maybe some more). I looked for the reason why (which is why it took a while to answer) and must admit I cannot find it.

So... When I have a bit more time, I will take another look at the Egmond family line before 1200 and make some of the wives they married orphans, if there is no other claim confirming they might be the daughter of that the Egmond chroniclers claim.

Thank you for you remarks!
