Street Addresses

Hello!

Thank you for uploading so much family information to WeRelate! I would make one suggestion, though. Street addresses are being imported in the place namespace. I have manually moved some of these street addresses to the description field right next to the place name. It will be easier for your cousins to find you by searching for "Edinburgh, Scotland" than by searching a specific street address. Street addresses or building names are great to know, post, and share, but perhaps best utilized in the description area.

Thanks!--Kittydoc 06:56, 18 May 2007 (MDT)

Thankyou, I'll bear it in mind. All my gedcoms will have the same format so I'll need to change them manually.

Welcome

Welcome to WeRelate, your virtual genealogical community. We're glad you have joined us. At WeRelate you can easily create ancestor web pages, connect with cousins and other genealogists, and find new information.

Video Tour

We strongly recommend that you spend a few minutes taking our video tour. It provides a brief overview of how to use the features of WeRelate. A little time spent here may save you time later. There are also in-depth text tutorials available from the Help button.

Create Webpages

The next thing to do is launch Family Tree Explorer, then select File in the Family Tree Explorer menu and give your family tree a name. You can either upload your GEDCOM or create person and family pages one at a time. To upload your GEDCOM, select File in the Family Tree Explorer menu and then click on Import and choose the GEDCOM file to import. The system will create an editable web page for each person and family in your GEDCOM. To create a page manually, select Add in the Family Tree Explorer menu and click on Add new person; enter the given (first name) and surname (last name), select Add, then fill in the blanks and save.

The Family Tree Explorer is a Flash application and will need to use some space in your computer to cache the files. That's computer talk for "If you store some ancestor page information on your computer, you will be able to view more pages faster. Otherwise, the system has to fetch each page every time you edit or look at it. This would make navigating your tree very slow.

Connect with other genealogists

You should always sign in when you are editing or adding pages. Use the signature button (second button from the right in the menu bar above the edit box) to sign your comments on discussion pages. That way others with similar interests can find you. If you click on the blue user name on any page, you will go to that person's home page. You can leave a message on his/her Discussion page. The Discussion page button is in the light green second level menu bar above.

Shared research pages

Shared research pages act like specialized message boards. Be careful to use only one name spelling and one location in each field; do not use abbreviations. Including postal codes and multiple spellings, names, or locations in these fields will cause your pages to be improperly indexed. It will make it harder for your cousins to find your pages and work with you. For more information see Shared research pages.

hoffie.GED is being held for review

The pages from "hoffie.GED" have not yet been generated because they appear to match pages from a GEDCOM you have previously imported to WeRelate. Please be patient while we take a look at your GEDCOM. If it turns out that the people in hoffie.GED don't really overlap people you have imported previously, your pages will be generated right after the review, which should happen tomorrow (or Monday if tomorrow falls on a weekend).

If you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in hoffie.GED, you have two options:

  1. Open the tree containing the information from the previous GEDCOM using Family Tree Explorer and delete the tree, then create a new tree and re-import this GEDCOM, or
  2. If the two GEDCOMs don't overlap that much, leave a message for Npowell. We'll go ahead with the import, after which you'll want to merge the overlapping people by hand.

It does look like they overlap. Let me know if you would like me to import the file anyway. -Nathan 16:22, 8 May 2007 (MDT)

I think I might give up altogether - it's all to difficult to follow. In the meantime, yes please import the hamilton ged anyway. If I do continue, finding the instructions on merging will keep me busy for a few nights and trying to understand them for another few weeks.

We don't currently have a one-step merge function. We plan to implement this over the Summer. In the meantime, feel free to work with your trees without merging them. You can always merge people later.
Could you let me know what you're having trouble with? We're working on improving the site's usability this month and I'd like to get suggestions.--Dallan 21:59, 8 May 2007 (MDT)

Hello again. Sorry its taken so long to reply. I've now got the hang (I think) of editing the names and addresses. I am not in the least computer literate and if I had the time to read through all the guidance and advise, watercooler stuff etc I would probably find at least some of the answers however 1) time is at a premium and if I read through it all I wouldnt have time to actually do the stuff and 2)sometimes the jargon defeats me before I get started. Mainly I do not understand the source numbers, the numbers appearing after the individual and family names. I have a few photographs I would upload but simply do not begin to understand the instructions for that. Hypertext = hyperventilation.

Tip for Family Pages

Hey, looks like your getting lots of good information posted on WeRelate. My name's Christian, and I'm an admin on this site. I just had a quick tip to help you with your family pages. When you enter information for children on a family page, you are actually creating links to a person page for each child (these links will appear in the right info box on the family page). As a result, you should follow the same naming conventions as you would when creating person pages. The title of the page should include a first and last name only, in order to prevent the creation of duplicate pages (for Robert Stevenson and Robert Louis Stevenson). I saw on some of your family pages that you included middle names (an easy mistake). If you enter the names with just a first and last name, you can click on the links to create each child's person page, on which you can include middle names and titles (see Help:Person pages and Help:Person pages tutorial. Give it a try and let me know what happens :) I'll try and make this topic more clearly explained on the help pages.

Thanks for your contribution to WeRelate! Let me know if you have any questions.--Wrhelp 12:37, 22 May 2007 (MDT)

Hello there

Ok - I was setting out to sort out the middle name thing you've highlighted but when I look at the family page for James Scarlett and Marion Wilson a "son" James Scarlett has appeared who I didnt put there and who was born almost 300 years before the parents. If I look at the person page for this James Scarlett he is linked to two sets of parents - my James Scarlett and Marion Wilson and also John Scarlett and Mrs Scarlett. What do I do? The two clearly don't belong together.

I have also just changed a Jeannie Scarlett to Jane Scarlett having found her birth certificate and her correct given name and now it has linked to a Jane Scarlett born 1598 in England- entirely the wrong family, area and time. I presume this is the same problem as above but I'm stumped.

OK. I looked at the family page, and I think that the problem is that you kept the same index number as before. When you entered the name, including the middle name, it gave it the index number of 1, as there were no other person pages with that name as the title. By just deleting the middle name, you linked the page to James Scarlett (1), which is a page already existing on WeRelate. Try entering just James Scarlett, and WeRelate will automatically assign him a new index number. Let me know how that works. You might want to check the other James Scarlett pages to make sure that none of them is your James Scarlett. --Wrhelp 05:12, 23 May 2007 (MDT)
Thankyou. I think I've done as you suggested. It all appears to be OK now.

One more tip (for shared research pages)

Way to go for making shared research pages. If these things really get going, they'll be a powerful tool for collaboration with other researchers. Just a small hint to make that a little easier. Try to begin them by locating them in a state or country (instead of Kerr in West Lothian, Scotland, Kerr in Scotland). That keeps it a little more broad, and easier for others to contribute. Then, when the shared research page gets too big, you can separate it into different shared research pages for different regions that link to the original. See Help:Shared research pages for more information. I'll go ahead and move the Kerr page to Kerr in Scotland, as well as your Cully srp to Cully in Scotland.

Thanks again for your contributions. Keep up the good work! :)

It looks like this GEDCOM really does overlap a previously imported GEDCOM. However, if you don't mind eliminating the duplicates, I can go ahead and import this new Anderson.GED anyway. Let me know, and thanks for using WeRelate! -Nathan 22:33, 4 June 2007 (MDT)

No its OK thanks, dont import it. I'm trying to sort out the duplication with the other geds already on the site so far. I'll re-import Anderson when I've done the others. Thanks. Jeanette

I think I've sorted the duplication out and re-imported the Anderson gedcom. Thanks. Jeanette

Brodie of Linlithgow [30 March 2011]

Hi Jinty1

I discovered your Brodie line (becoming Kerr) the other day.

I am related to that line. My grandmother, Agnes McKenzie (Brodie) Dean’s, aunt was Margaret “Maggie” Brodie who married Peter Weir Kerr – i.e Maggie was my grandmother’s father, John Brodie’s (b. 1855 in Linlithgow) sister.

I’m not sure how you are related to this line, but I assume throughthe Kerr’s.

I’ve added a few earlier Brodies to your Tree

Regards

Peter Dean

John Brodie Kerr [17 September 2017]

Hi Jinty1

Just a bit more information for you on the above. He is buried in the church of Ireland cemetery in Balla, Co. Mayo RoI.

There is to be a wreath laying and service on Sunday 9th June. His name is recorded on the Mayo peace park Memorial and there is a website that has photographs of graves in Ireland. I can't find out his cause of death, but I'm betting on the spanish flu. His battalion, the 10th Royal Scotts, Departed for Archangel in Russia to fight the bolsheviks at about the time he was buried. I hope this helps. Regards--Glen1sland 06:57, 1 May 2013 (EDT)

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for all the messages and I'm sorry I haven't previously responded. I have only recently come back to the genealogy after a number of years.

Yes, I am related through the Kerr family though Peter Weir Kerr isnt a direct relative. Thanks for the information - its all useful.

Regards,

Jeanette--Jinty1 21:50, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
