Welcome

Welcome to WeRelate, your virtual genealogical community. We're glad you have joined us. At WeRelate you can easily create ancestor webpages, connect with cousins and other genealogists, and find new information.

Create Webpages

The first thing to do is launch Family Tree Explorer, then select File in the Family Tree Explorer menu and give your family tree a name. You can either upload your GEDCOM or create person and family pages one at a time. To upload your GEDCOM, select File in the Family Tree Explorer menu and then click on Import and choose the GEDCOM file to import. The system will create a editable web page for each person and family in your GEDCOM. To create a page manually, select Add in the Family Tree Explorer menu and click on Add new person; enter the given (first name) and surname (last name), select Add, then fill in the blanks and save.

The Family Tree Explorer is a Flash application and will need to use some space in your computer to cache the files. That's computer talk for "If you store some ancestor page information on your computer, you will be able to view more pages faster. Otherwise, the system has to fetch each page every time you edit or look at it. This would make navigating your tree very slow.

Connect with other genealogists

You should always sign in when you are editing or adding pages. Use the signature button to sign your work (the swiggle, second from the right, above the edit box). That way others with similar interests can find you. If you click on the blue user name on any page, you will go to that person's home page. You can leave a message on his/her Discussion page. The Discussion page button is in the light green second level menu bar above.

Shared research pages

Just FYI, if you title all your shared research pages with one surname and one place (without abbreviation), they will be indexed into categories properly. It will be easier for your cousins to find your pages. For instance, if you create a page for Smith in Kentucky, it will be indexed in the Smith category, the Kentucky category and the Smith in Kentucky category. The next time someone creates a page for Smith in Kentucky they will come to your page instead of creating a second page for "Smith in Kentucky". It's all about making it easier networking with other genealogists. It is best to use larger jurisdictions such as states or countries instead of towns because our ancestors moved around and generally had connections in the surrounding areas. The information you are looking for may well be in a nearby town. If you want to be more specific, autocomplete will give you a list of towns, counties, districts, etc., if you type in the name, add a comma, then wait a moment. You can then select the standardized jurisdictional name.

When abbreviations are used, the system thinks that the abbreviation is a different place. So, it won't put "Kentucky" articles in the same category with "KY". If you title your page with an abbreviation, for example "Smith in KY", and your cousin titles a page with "Smith in Kentucky", your articles will not be in the same category. Thus, it is less likely that you will connect with that cousin. The same is true if you title your page with multiple locations. For instance, if you title your page with "KY, OH and MT", it will be placed in the "KY, OH, and MT" category. A cousin searching for "Smith in Kentucky" won't see your page in the right category index.

Likewise, if you title your page with multiple spellings, such as Smith, Smythe or Smothe or with added letters such as Smither/s or Smyth(er)(s), your page will not be put in the categories for each spelling; instead, a new category will be created for your particular list. Your cousins may not have the same list and probably won't enter that exact list in their search, making it more difficult for you to connect.

Click on a surname category link at the bottom of any person page to see the category index list. :-D--Kittydoc 06:32, 5 April 2007 (MDT)

Error importing My Family File.ged

We had an error while attempting to import My Family File.ged. This is most likely our fault. We will review the error and should have your pages ready tomorrow (or Monday if tomorrow falls on a weekend). There is no need to re-import your GEDCOM file.

Carrell Family of Delta co. TX [12 October 2009]

Hi, JGallagher. You must be relate4d to (or very interested in) my Carrell family, I think. I don't see anyone in your lists that I have identified, but my gfather was John Allen C., b. 1872 Lamar Co., just across the river/ county line from Ben Franklin, Delta Co. His parents were George C., b. 1838 in GA and Martha E. Osborne, m. in Oktibbeha Co. MS, son of Jesse C. b. 1809 Richland Co. SC and Sarah. Sounds like the same family. It may be that the families you list were descended from Jesse's bro Thomas, b. 1810/11 SC (wife Elsie). They moved together several times, finally settling in TX. If any of this fits with your info, pls let me know. I would like to make contact with cousins and compare notes. Thanks, Ed Carrell--Asearcher 14:06, 12 October 2009 (EDT)

Coker DNA project [7 February 2010]

Hi, JGallagher. I was adding other wives of my great-grandfather, William M.R. Gray and see that your James Henrdix Gray is already there. He was the son of William and his 3rd wife, Mary Fannie Hill. My info came from his grandson, Dennis Gray. If you are related I would like to compare notes on them. I do have some photos I will add to this collaborative tree. This is my first week and I am still spinning out on the learning curve! Jay Harris

Gilbert/Delela [4 July 2011]

I saw where you had linked an Gilbert Anderson to a Delela Sansing. Do you know where they are from and who their children are? My brick wall is a Gilbert Anderson who was married to a Delilah and they had a few children, one of which was Augustus. Delilah and some of the children ended up in Texas from Alabama. Could this be the same Gilbert and Delilah? I never could find my Delilah's maiden name. She is listed in the census as Della and Delilah and she was from SC. Gilbert I think was from NC.

Amy, We may have the same family. Do you descend from Gilbert and Delila? Please write me at aileron78@hotmail.com I have a group of Sansing researchers who can help you.

Bridget McGinley, Charles Gallagher [15 August 2011]

I have some info and links to that family. Bridget was still alive in 1901. I did not think that Charles was born that early. I thought maybe circa 1830.--Odb 08:41, 15 August 2011 (EDT)

Gentrys of louisiana and roy gentrys death. [21 June 2012]

Hi, My name is Mark C. Gentry Jr.

I live in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

I just found this site.

I am getting started and plan on expanding the tree from Roy "Bert" Gentry.

Bert was my great grandfather. His wife was Edith, but I have yet to find out her maiden name. They had two children. Bill Gentry and Earl Wayne (Pete) Gentry (My Grandfather). Earl was NEVER called by that name. He was ALWAYS called Pete. He told me he didnt know how or why he was named that but thats just how it went. Anyway Pete married Jeanette "Jenny" Reed. They had four children, Mike, Edward, And Mark. There was also a fourth baby that died at birth. Jenny, Pete, Mike and the baby are buried in Minden. The only person in the Gentry side of my family that is still alive is My Uncle Eddy. There are several cousins on my great uncle Bill Gentry's branch of the tree, however. My father married Denise Dewey and had Me and My brother Keith Gentry. I have a son, Branson Gentry, and my brother has a son named Wyatt Gentry.

I plan on extending this out onto the wiki, but I just wanted to let you in on some possible help.

As far as Berts death, I see where it says that he was burned putting gasoline on some pipes. I am not sure if this is completely correct, although I could be very well be wrong. I was always under the impression that he was trying to get the gas cap off of a tractor and somehow the fire started that way.

One thing that is rather unique about this family is the fact that from the time Kim, Bill Gentrys daughter (Bill was berts son) All the way to Edwards grandaughter ( Dont know her name, shame on me!), There were no girls born. --Dragonbat13 10:38, 21 June 2012 (EDT)

Rose Gallagher [10 July 2015] ==

By family tradition my ancestor Mary Galaher had a sister Rose who we know nothing about. I posted what I know of Mary Galaher and her parents at www.wikitree.com/wiki/Galaher-3 and same address ending in -4. There are a few nice photos. I wonder if you can establish any connection between us with this information.--magentawriter 15:56, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
