Changes to Family:Thomas Thacker and Margaret Unknown (1) [11 November 2013]

Hi, I got your message asking about the notice you got regarding changes to Family:Thomas Thacker and Margaret Unknown (1). Looks like you're fairly new to WeRelate and I'm guessing you're still on the learning curve, so some of this explanation may seem obvious. If so, my apologies.

First, in the email you received, there should be a URL link that lets you see the changes that have been made. It should show that the change was made to the Talk Page for the family of Thomas Thacker and Margaret ( Family:Thomas Thacker and Margaret Unknown (1) ). The change is that a message (template) has been added to not merge the family of Thomas Thacker and Margaret Unknown (1) with the family of Thomas Thacker and Margaret Unknown (2) ( Family:Thomas Thacker and Margaret Unknown (2) ). The change doesn't show up in the History for the Family page, but if you click on Talk (just under the Logo at the top left), you will see the message, and the change does show up on the History for the Talk page. (Hope this makes sense.)

As for why: As you know, WeRelate isn't supposed to have duplicate pages for the same person or family, but they do happen for one reason or another. So the computer goes through and makes a list of pages that it thinks might be duplicates, and volunteer administrators go through the list and try to decide if what the computer thinks is accurate or not. If the pages appear to be duplicates, then they are merged (this can always be undone if the pages really are not duplicates) or the person(s) watching the page are asked if they are duplicates. If it looks as if the pages really are not duplicates, then the Do Not Merge Template is put on one of the pages, which tells the computer to take both pages off the list.

You have two Family Pages for Thomas Thacker and Margaret Unknown, so the computer put them on the list. When I looked at them, though, it looked as if Thomas married twice, first to a woman in about 1510 in London or Calais ( Family:Thomas Thacker and Margaret Unknown (1) ) who was the mother of his children; and second in 1542 in London to another Margaret ( Family:Thomas Thacker and Margaret Unknown (2) ). This seemed quite reasonable, so I added the Do Not Merge message.

If I was wrong, and the two women are the same, then you can go ahead and merge them and just take the message off the Talk Page.

If the two women are not the same, one thing you might want to do is either change the name of Family:Thomas Thacker and Margaret Unknown (1) to Thomas Thacker and Unknown, or change the Person Page for Person:Unknown (26568) to Margaret Unknown, whichever is appropriate. It's not critical, just neater, and prevents someone else from deciding to do one or the other some time in the future.

Hope this helps, and wasn't too boring! I know it takes time to get used to WeRelate (or at least it took me a bit of time), but now that I'm used to it, I wouldn't go anywhere else, so -- Welcome, and hang in there. --GayelKnott 17:02, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Thomas Hopkins and Katherine Unknown (1) [30 November 2013]

Thanks for clarifying the question of whether or not this was the same family as Thomas Hopkins and Katherine Unknown (2). I've copied that part of your message to the talk page for Thomas Hopkins and Katherine Unknown (1). You might also want to put somewhere on the Person or Family pages that they lived in Derbyshire, just so other researchers will know as well.

As for merging duplicates, there is a Help page, Help:Merging pages, which you may find useful. It's quite detailed, so you might want to keep track of it for future reference.

In the meantime, for your Thomas Hopkins and Katherine Unknown (1), to add the "Do Not Merge Template":

On the menu at the top of any page, under Admin, you should see "Compare Pages". Click on that, and it will take you to a form to fill in.

Under Compare Families, you will need to fill in:
Thomas Hopkins and Katherine Unknown (1)
Thomas Hopkins and Katherine Unknown (2)

These are the titles of the pages, and the numbers are an important part of the title.

Once you've done that, click the "Compare" button.

This will show you the information on the two pages in a side-by-side comparison. One family will have a green check mark in the little box under the page title. You will need to check the box under the other page title as well.

Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the "Not A Match" button.

That's it. The computer will automatically add the template to one of the pages and remove both pages from the "Duplicate Pages" List.

Hope this helps, --GayelKnott 21:41, 30 November 2013 (UTC)
